Although I like the smooth Sentinel landscapes with the low resolution more with every flight, I was looking for a free source with a higher resolution. Found a source, called "Here"

https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis-marke ... 6a3d417046

Some content of that page:

"Pricing: Free

...

HERE Places can also be used in developing interactive virtual reality games to provide up-to-date location context. "

So far so good. Tried to create a texture with it

Looks good in the bmp in Working\Terragen\Textures and after import with LandscapeEditor in Working\Textures
working.jpg
BTW The same place in the Sentinel texture, quiet a difference ...
sentinel.jpg
But after creating the dds files with LandscapeEditor they look like that
dds.jpg
Overall white spots (and not as sharp as the sources). In Condor every white spot is water

Have compared the properties of the source files with other landscapes, don't see any difference. Size in pixel is the same, 8192 x 8192, all 24 bit bmp.

Any ideas?

The problem is in the dds converter. The white spots are located in full dark pixel. Try to convert them with another tool; and use DXT1 if there is no water in the patch.

Thanks, looked now how it's made with Condor_Tiles.exe. It writes a lot of batch files and uses nvdxt.exe. One parameter is wrong (they use -DXT1c, but it only accepts -dxt1c), after correction I get dds-files with the same water spots.

Do you know a tool to replace the black pixels in a bmp file with another color (nearly black) per batch? I don't want to modify 600 files by hand ;-)

That's a good idea.
You can probably do this with a lot of free image processing software that can do batch processing like Irfanview or XnView, or The GIMP. But of course, the best of all is Photoshop!
But if you use these softwares, why don't you directly convert your images to dds?

That's easy to explain. Because I have no idea about graphic design. Everything I do here is new for me. So I muddle threw everything I find and try to make easy processes of it (that is my domain, easy processes ;-) ).

Same with dds. I don't know what that is. I only know if I change something in a dds file, the place then is under water. It has something to do with the alpha channel. What is an alpha channel? And so on (don't answer these questions). So I found the way how to create/modify the source files, import them and export them to dds. Now with the batch files from Condor_Tiles it's much better, because the LandscapeEditor isn't blocked hours with that process. To change the lots of batch files automatically is no problem for me ;-)

So next step will be to find a method to change black in nearly black automatically. My collection of routines is growing. Thanks for all hints so far

HERE is/was nav software from MS. MS also has/had Bing. A google 'competitor'. They have a lot of POI and adress databases. For some time MS owned a lot of orthoimagery data, but have sold most of it.
ESRI is a GIS software suplier. They don't own orthoimagary data. It's the same as with GOOGLE maps/earth. They provide the software to work with layers of various supliers (copyrighted by their respected owners) or your own layers.

The url you provide is a layer for use in ESRI software. It's a layer of POI data (HERE owned POIs, business listings, local/niche source)... NOT orthoimagary data.

The imagary, depending on location/ source, probably is copyrighted if the data has a higher res then 10m/px.

Always check the source.

I stop replying here. Even if false info is posted by others.

Thanks very much, I hoped with my post that someone would give me a hint if I understood the "Here" text wrong.

I'm very happy with my sentinel landscapes, they are very good to fly xc, and I don't want to do anything else in Condor.

Because you probably downloaded from esri.com...

ESRI World Imagery Layer :

ESRI World Imagery (for Export) Layer to be able to work offline :
https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?i ... e7eae95952

Both Pages Note :

Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics, and the GIS User Community [read commercial data source]

- This work is licensed under the Esri Master License Agreement.
View Summary | View Terms of Use

Quote From Summery :
IF YOU HAVE AN ARCGIS SUBSCRIPTION YOU MAY
- Use items owned by Esri in ArcGIS Online in conjunction with Esri software or an ArcGIS or Developer subscription for projects and applications that are both internal and external use
- Include screen captures or a printed or plotted map of maps and applications owned by Esri. Details on permitted uses are available here.
- Use the basemap data offline in the following manner
• The data may only be taken offline using Esri Content Packages
• The package can be used with any device as long as it is used exclusively with Esri software.

UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS
- Provide attribution to Esri and its data providers.
- Use with Esri software, and comply with its terms of use. If you do not have Esri software, you must purchase an ArcGIS or Developer subscription.

YOU MAY NOT
- Systematically harvest basemap tiles through any method other than using Esri Content Packages
- Redistribute basemap tiles

So, these data layers may only be used in their software. And published works must be credited to ESRI and commercial owners of the data in the layers. And no downloading (stealing and server overload) the layerdata for use ouside their software or even distributing it to others...

Thanks, that is very interesting. I will work only with the Sentinel source in future, there i haven't found any restriction (until now). And I'm not the only one who says, that landscapes made with that source are good enough for flying xc

Find an easy tool for non-programmer and non-designer to do it very easy. Don't needed it to solve the problem of the thread, but it would do the job very good: ImBatch

https://www.highmotionsoftware.com/products/imbatch

It's free for personally use.

Like to share the found, maybe it helps someone
