2000km - No Ridge, No Wave?????

Post by Sprunga » Fri Oct 22, 2021 11:11 pm

I tried but didn't make it!

For ages been wondering about how far you could get without using ridge or wave. I set a 2000km task thinking it wouldn't be achievable. I used the EB29 and set thermal strength very strong and the cloud base to 4000m. I managed to achieve 1884km in just over 11 hours.

If you had thermal set to very strong why you only have that average climb ratio:
Right turns (average vario) 8 (3.16 m/s)
Left turns (average vario) 2 (2.29 m/s)
?

Edit
ok i think that CC count it wrong...

Hi Sprunga

I've been trying to fly E -> W right over South Africa in a day on the TranZA landscape.

https://www.condor.club/viewscenery/242/?id=452

Jaco van Dyk has flown 2,005 km!

I've tried a few times now, but only get as far as Aggeneys before the clouds disappear and the sun sets.

I guess these long distances really test our thermalling technique.

I have so much to learn!

Cheers
Jeff

I could see how he did the 2005km in one direction with a tail wind. My task was two triangles so I had 2 into wind legs. Having said that I’m not sure if I was actually flying at the best speed. Someone else could of been faster? I’m keen to give that scenery a try now!

Why don't you guys try the Southern Norway landscape ? On 21. June you would have significantly longer days :

Bjorli : Daylight: 03 h 32 - 23 h 25 (UTC+2) Total:19:53 (https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@669239 ... &year=2021)

In SouthernNorway 4 it's dark in summer too, but not in RL

Time in Condor is local solar time (the sun reaches its zenith at 12:00), hence 23:00 in Condor is approximately 0:30 CEST=UTC+2 (No AM/PM please  )
If you want to have 23:00 CEST, you must set Condor to 21:30 (give or take a few minutes - pic below is at Bjorli )

That being said, Condor is not very good at twilights especially at high latitudes

Maybe you never have been here. In June and July we never see stars here, it's not really dark here like in Condor.

This picture is made 20.06.2016 round about 00:30, of course without a flash light. The light at the road is only on because it's night and nobody cares about energy ...

I have been camping under a tent in Narvik in August last century (difficult to sleep), so I know what you are talking about.
Besides that, the link that I posted in my first post is quite clear about the fact that there is no night : https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@669239 ... &year=2021

... but apparently you haven't read my comment which doesn't contradict what you say :

Yes, I read that. For me it's not a problem, if Condor isn't very exact in that, there are enough hours left to fly on a day.

BTW: Narvik is very north. I was on the Lofoten years ago, unbelievable nice, but far away
