Island of New Guinea

Post by congo » Tue May 19, 2020 10:47 am

New Guinea

Second largest island in the world.

Highest mountain peaks between the Himalayas and the Andes.

Unbroken mountains for over 2000km distance.

Anyone ever heard of it?

Anyone thinking of creating scenery where no glider ever flies?

I worked there as a pilot for 5 years. Amazing place to fly!

There is a scenery for PNG made for Condor V1. It is centered on Goroka in the highlands. It would be cool to get some strips with the slope that most of them have!

This a video a mate of mine took while were there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS_XWbjI15M

Here is some highlights if you want to skip

Tapini: https://youtu.be/YS_XWbjI15M?t=438

Kerau (Bit scary - cliff to the right and a bend in the strip. Really Rough as well!) https://youtu.be/YS_XWbjI15M?t=678

Fane: https://youtu.be/YS_XWbjI15M?t=996

Onangi: https://youtu.be/YS_XWbjI15M?t=1195 (you will see the village off the end of the strip on a bit of a hill - I took off there one day and had to fly around it - bit heavy - probably over weight  )

Yongai: https://youtu.be/YS_XWbjI15M?t=1590 (watch the take off. You can't see most of the strip from where you start the take off roll!)

Thanks for the video Sprunga, Awesome!

My Dad worked there for Pacific Helicopters in the Eighties, but I never got to go there.

No worries Congo. Was your Dad a helicopter Pilot? If so is he a Kiwi? I worked for Hevi Lift for a while and nearly all of the helicopter pilots were Kiwi's !! Not that there's anything wrong with that :D

Hi Sprunga,

No, my father was a construction manager for Pacific Helicopters over there,
I think he was building infrastructure near new helipads.
We lived in Queensland at the time, but my my Dad is from the U.S. originally,
so you would've heard his yank accent if you met him :)
