Control with Xbox 360 Controller

Post by bobthetomato » Fri Mar 27, 2020 12:58 am

I'm trying to fly Condor 2 with an Xbox 360 controller. So far I've tried opening the sim using Steam (added as a non steam game) and mapping the controls that way, but was unsatisfied with the results. Has anyone been able to do this?

I haven't tried it, but I use an Xbox controller in other games, and to be honest, I don't think you will get the subtle control you need in Condor, albeit, it would be better than a keyboard or mouse.

Joysticks have a much longer lever arm which equates to very fine and subtle control movements when required or desired.

For example, proper radio control transmitters have sticks that can be length adjusted, and I always wind them all the way out to get more delicate control of the models I fly, if that helps to explain it. Control exponential (expo) can be programmed into the RC controllers to smooth out the controls near the centre of stick movement to assist with more delicate control, but this means that things get very sensitive at the controls extremes. Xbox drivers use "expo" by default, control is not linear.

If the sticks on the Xbox controller were 3 times longer, that would be ok. Even when driving a fast car through the streets in GTA with the Xbox Controller, we usually tap tap tap the stick rather than actually steering the car properly with the controller, that's because it is too sensitive with those short sticks, and possibly because the control resolution is not fine enough, coupled with control exponential added to the equation.

I've been using the Xbox Elite 2 controller with Condor and I love it. You have the ability to de-tune sensitivities in the accessories app. Additionally, it comes with stick extenders which may help...but I find I don't need them.

Let me know if you have any questions!
