Tearing fix - nvidia card

Post by Pit_R » Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:39 am

Hello!
I have NVidia GTX 1060 + i5 + plenty of ram + 60Hz monitor.
How to avoid tearing? Any hints? Settings?
Thanks for help!

Did you try turning Vertical sync on?

Sure I did.
Best setting so far is full screen and Vertical sync on.
Unf. when i made once alt/tab - got tearing again. (I like to have CoTaSa and XCsoar on same monitor).

Maybe turn it on in the nvidia settings as well.

I did, I made several tests with different combinations of settings. Nothing helped.
I hope someone who fixed it already will answer there. Let's say someone with 60Hz monitor, nvidia and CoTaSa.
Or maybe all are on 120+Hz monitors or just not care? :)

In full screen mode, after condor has lost focus for whatever reason I find I have to use ALT+ENTER to get nvidia based V-Sync and force feedback back on following the usual ALT-TAB to regain focus.

PS I use adaptive v-sync to prevent other issues when the frame rate drops below refresh rate.

Yup, noticed it. ALT+ENTER brings back full screen, but also makes CoTaSa invisible. ;)
So - looks like alt/tab makes C2 to be 'fullscreen emulation' mode which makes tearing.

Question now is how to avoid tearing in 'fullscreen emulation'.

Doesn’t the in game v-sync option help with that?

Hello Pit.

Do you use TrackIR? I had similar problems after switching to trackIR 5. It seems to be due to the polling rate. After a long search on the net I had found the hint: „TrackIR 5 has a 120 Hz update frequency. If you run your games at any other frame rates than integer multiples or divisors of 120 (eg 40, 60, 120, 240)hey will have a stuttery motion, especially with panning the camera. The proper way to fix this is to limit the frame rate to 60. 120 you can probably not reach consistently“.
I had to limit the framerate with RTSS to 60 fps on my G-sync capable 100hz monitor. After that it went smoothly again.
You can see my n-vidia settings on the pictures.

Maybe this will help.

Thank you Patrick and Timkie.
Will try both settings (with 'fullscreen emulation' on).
I don't use TrackIr and I have 60HZ (no G-sync) monitor (but I am ok with just 60 fps - no problem).
New drivers allow to use max frame rate, as well as nVidiaProfileInspector allow to set fixed framerate etc. Was trying both - still saw tearing.
Will try your settings. Thanks again

Have you checked Vsync is actually activating?

Press D (I think) whilst flying to display your FPS. What is it showing? It should be 60fps and no more if it is active.

Sure, always checking with LShift+D. I have 60, 59 fps with Vsync. And tearing. :/

What are your current settings?

In the example settings of P1 I would turn down the graphics settings. Turn down things you would hardly see.
I see AA 8x in NVIDIA and MSAA 8x in Condor. That's a bit overkill I would say.

Searching for proper settings combination. Now have smthn modest like that:

2020-03-12_19-00-11.jpg

All is good in 'Fullscreen'. Tearing is back with 'Full screen emulation' (which auto start when I use CoTaSa or made alt/tab to look at bigger map etc). Looks like 'always on top' over real fullscreen is impossible (I've made little research). But why tearing occurs in 'Fullscreen emulation'? Isn't my rig good enough? Is it a problem of 60 Hz monitor? Or settings combination? Or all have this and don't care?
