There was an instance many years ago in the UK where a glider pilot took a smoked barograph up in Cessna and then claimed an altitude record. I think what Olympia was trying to say was that cheating in the old days was possible, maybe easier than today (with modern technology)

I think the smoked foil system was designed to allow flights to altitudes where an ink system would have frozen up and ceased recording. It was always a faff to do, as you needed a a candle to do the smoking, and also remember to set the datum altitude and wind the damn thing up. Either of these things omitted would lose you your height or duration claim. I wasn't intending to do the 5 hrs the day I did it by accident, but fortunately I was testing a new barograph I had bought and had it running on what was intended to be a quick circuit. ILAFFT* and always took a running baro with me after that.
