Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
So I had a crack at blender and following a bit of youtube and much trial and error; I think I have created a passable complex for the Yorkshire Gliding Club at Sutton Bank. Missing the odd bit of fence or a fuel tank for the tugs, but should be recognisable and hopefully close enough to real scale (kinda had to guess at heights).
Two problems:
1. I have no idea how to start texturing it; if someone could create a template, I could try and create a rough texture since I know what it looks like.
2. I exported the OBJ but the condor ObjectEditor won't open it. I have no idea what I've done.
I've attached a bunch of files if anyone fancies trying to fix it or can provide a bit of guidance, and then this becomes a usable object for anyone's scenery.

Re: Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
I can open the .OBJ file in a 3d viewer, it appears ok. The problem with the ObjectEditor may be in the scaling and units of the object? Your blender file isnt using any scale. You can change this in the Scene tab under Units. Maybe someone can tell us what units ObjectEditor expects (or what other OBJ export settings must be applied) but I would try with centimeter or meters and see what happens.
As for texturing; this isnt my strong suit in blender either. You need to apply a UV map first so blender knows how to wrap your texture(s). This youtube video does a good job explaining it:

All Condor uses 1 Unit = 1 metre. The model is scaled very large
But it does open in Wings3d

Nice to see emerging interest in scenery design for the UK. I am very happy for any of my UK sceneries to be enhanced or replaced with more detail. Now in my seventies perhaps I can take a back seat.

No mate. Therein lies decline. Keep at it.
Or perhaps with your new 3d modelling skills you can make a plane?

I did make a model of a Skylark 4 many years ago. I think it may have been for MSFS (before Condor). There was a very active soaring community within it:

I am not up to speed with Blender yet but getting to a working level with wings 3D. As stated the UV maps need to be created, from my point of view, map the individual units rather than trying to UV map the whole thing.KipperUK wrote: ↑Thu Jan 03, 2019 12:56 amSo I had a crack at blender and following a bit of youtube and much trial and error; I think I have created a passable complex for the Yorkshire Gliding Club at Sutton Bank. Next we need someone at Sutton bank to get busy with a camera/mobile phone to photograph from each side (as square on as possible) and post the images.
OXO has a Airfield Project which encourages anyone to contribute to airfield design and detail. Currently in his FTP server are folders for West-UK2 and the Netherlands. I believe that the French community are doing the same thing for Arc Alpine but are probably using thier own file sharer.
The Airfield Project no doubt can be expanded to include other areas. The amount of work and hours put in by scenery designers is immense and therefore any assistance with the detail of airfield would be a tremendous help.
If you wish to help with the Airfield Project then PM OXO.
There are too few scenery designers out there, we need more.

Re: Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
I hoped the scale would be about right, I assumed blender units were metres and took measurements from satellite views on google maps - it should be about right if that’s the case; it is large because I’m the model represents 2 glider hangars and workshop, the tug hangar and our circular clubhouse.
I am happy to take loads of photos next time I’m at the club to help with texturing.

Re: Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
I think i found it, and managed to export your blend file to an OBJ and load it in the object editor. You need to select the triangulate faces option when exporting as OBJ
Then it loads fine.

Re: Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
Yep, that did the job. Tweaked the design a bit and now I'm really pleased with my untextured, but reasonably accurate looking clubhouse. Hopefully later I will get to post a roughly textured version after I've digested that video....
Re: Sutton Bank Clubhouse - Almost there, need help.
I can't figure out how to unwrap all of the objects into one / or several templates that I can go and add textures to.
Maybe someone can help?
I've improved the model somewhat.

Well, my texturing skills may leave much to be desired - in that I just used solid colours, but it looks like what it's meant to!

.... and here's my "final" version, not perfect but very much good enough to be recognisable, I think. Caravans and glider trailers can come later.

Here's the c3d and texture if anyone wants to use it.
