1500km ALPS
hello.
i want to know if has anybody done 1500 km flight on alps. i tried to do it but about 100 km before finished all of thermals stops.
Bad ragaz-Mariazell-Slovenj Gradec-Sondrio Caiolo-Samedan-Sterzing-Toblach Mil-Innsbruck-newtp-klosters-bad ragaz.
total distance is 1500.6km
i flew with ASW27

Wow I have trouble sitting still long enough for 200 K
how long would 1500 take to complete (on average)?
Edit: I'm a NUB, I should have thought before asking..
I seem to average around 90 Klm/h on most mountain type tasks, so that means you would need around 16 spare hours to kill to travel 1500 Klm in Mountain country (unless you are lucky enough to find a long fast wave that's aligned in the right path for you)

If you are depending on thermals till the end.
Set the start time to Mid August 2008, 7am. trying for longest day,
temp high activity high, Thermals get weaker and die out in the evening.
if there is enough wind finish along some ridge's.
It will just take a little planing on the tp positions early day
and evening. On long tasks I try to set enough wind for just
enough lift off of the ridge but still able to catch some
strong thermals, that way near the end of day I still may be able
to ride some ridge home.
Also as the lift has gotten weaker you might need to drop some water,
figure 1 ltr per sec on average, You will lose some energy and speed
but you may gain that extra altitude you need.

If you want to fly with some realistic weather settings. Try about 20 km/h winds and medium to strong thermals. Start right at the time the thermals start where there are some higher ridges. Fly a combi of ridge and thermals trough the day. If you do this right you should be able to get 120 maybe 130 avarage. If you run out of thermals in the evening there is still some ridgelift left which can get you home. Should take you about 11 to 13 hours then.
If you don't want realistic weather settings. Go for 50 km/h winds right form the north or south and run east west along some different ridges in the eastern alps scenery. Just cruise at Vne along the ridges and you'll get something like 250 km/h avarage (Stay up high to get the IAS/TAS advantage, I completed a 500km wave/ridge task with a 290 km/h average flying slightly downwind at high altitude). With 250 average you'll do 4 hrs per 1000 km so you'll be done in about 6 hours. But there's no fun in this. Must be a bit of a challenge.

I think you flew very non-effective. Depending on the plane choosed and the working height you used you flew just too fast between thermals. Drag increases as a factor of the square of the speed, so if you fly too fast, your drag will kill all advantage of the LD your plan have and at 250km/h almost every plane will fall like a brick... and you will have to stop to thermal more often, reducing your average speed this way.iceman16g wrote:average speed...148 km/h

No your right. If you look a the polars of most gliders, they have a "kink" somewhere. At higher speeds the polar begins to drop off quite steeply. In the 15m and 18m class with full water you probably should not go above about 200 km/h unless your running along a ridge or under a cloud street.
In the non flapped gliders you can more clearly see this "kink" or bend in the polar. If you go to far over that your glide-ratio just drops off quickly. I know for a ls-4b this is at about 140 to 150 km/h. The modern standard class gliders can go a little faster. The glider is just not designed to fly efficient if you go over that.

i flew with asw27 full of water, and normal the vario was shoving 3,5m/s down
Baseball, Soccer, Football. All very masculine sports, but unlike these sports Gliding needs 2 balls to play

If you are still interested. I made 1500km on central alps Samedan Bozen. 1750km would be also possible (about 140km/h average). I made the 1750km on Zell am See to Sondrio 128km/h av. But just with faults (got tired ). I will try 2000km soon- Sondrio Dorfersee (near Kitzsteinhorn) finish Mt Penegal near Bozen. This is a combination of ridge flying and during the day thermals. Send me your mail if you want the tracks or flight plans. I like central alps no other maps have that details that make for that real feeling.
