ZA: Ridge task, revisited.

Post by thermal » Wed May 10, 2006 10:40 pm

ZA's Ridge task, revisited.

RL season has begun, so there will be no scoring.

This task will run for ~2 days, on an experimental new Server setup.
Just for fun, after all these Alps a kind of sentimental journey in Slovenia, and to hone your skills.
It is a variation of the Record Task that ran a couple of months ago.
But, because of some "issues" in Condor's pre- Patch 8 weather system, it was impossible to complete and was therfore suspended. Until now.
As before, it won't be as easy as it looks though ....

Briefing:

The Meteo guy has been nervously watching his screens for days.
It's a crystal clear, cold morning and rumours are that today will be the day of the century!
Unfortunately, you are not the only one who noticed that.

Your own private plane is still in the workshop since your last "incident", so you will have to use one of the club's gliders.
You arrive at the airport very early, but all gliders have been booked already for the entire day.

Except one, but that is booked by the President's wife for 10:30 hours. Sharp.!
And believe me, the last thing you want, is to mess with her!

However, you desperately need a flight and some good points for the club competition.
You decide to take the risk and book the glider anyway for take-off at 08:15 hours or so, and go for the ZA: Ridge task.
The girl at the booking office thinks you've gone mad starting this early, but accepts your reservation.
"You'd better make sure the glider is lined up at the strip at 10:30 again, in one piece, pollished and ballasted !", she adds.
She hangs a sign on the window that says "hitro miniti popolnoma rezerviran" which you, as a regular visitor understand, and she hurries home.
Oops! But, you have a plane! 8)

Meteo:
There is only a light wind from the southwest, so waves are not likely to develop.
Even the ridges won't give much under these conditions.
Very strong thermals and a high enough cloud base are predicted further on the day.
Question is, will there be any thermals when you go through the gate at ~08:30 hours....?

Start method is "Airborne" as before, but the dreaded regatta start has been removed.
Instead, you now have a 5 minute start-window.

Think about your strategy before you start...
Good luck, fly safely, but be back by 10:30.

Hi,

Nice race again. I really did not know what to expect when I crossed the strartline. Just flying in dead air an very weak ridge I craweld towards TP1. Halfway I saw some Cu's popping over the hills. Not long after that I connected to the first thermal of the day...a whopping 4 m/s. The not promised wave was also there so after that it was a nice and easy flight. Finished with an average speed of 137,9 km/h.

I was, off course, in time to meet the president's wife and give her the chance to fly 'her' big bird....

Congrats to those who finnished this task!
In previous Condor patches this would have been impossible, because of a bug in the weather system.
Well done, and hopefully the thermal tilting will be fixed in Patch 9.
....meet the president's wife
So... you met the club President's wife!
I bet you think twice now before you take such a horrible risk again!

The Meteo guy said that it would be unlikely that waves would develop.
Even Condor weather men sometimes make mistakes.

In the briefing I said that this task would run ~2 days.
But, since I have some RL flying to do, that will be a bit longer.

Have fun.
