Introduction to Mountains' Ridge Flight

Post by Xavier » Mon Nov 09, 2015 4:07 pm

Ridge Flight near the mountains' walls needs some elementary cautions!

No Speed = No Maneuverability.

No noise in your cockpit, you are flying to slow. Push forward your stick.

In lee side of the ridge, push forward your stick, never be afraid of your speed till 140 km/h or more.

In lift side of the ridge, slow your speed, but keep some margin of a minimum of 10 km/h over the minimum speed of your glider.

Find the best distance between your glider and the mountains' walls to reach maximum lift. The best lift in ridge flight is not near by the mountains' walls and it is somewhere dangerous.

Experiment these elementary advices in Condor. But always follow the precise advices of your instructor in real flying.

The following tasks are made for ASK13 with the same fair weather than older tasks, published in 2008, with nearly the same way, but actualized with WildAlps1.

Start and Turn Points are automatic, no need to take a picture. You can start any time you want until you reach the max start altitude. Clouds are always easily avoidable.
You will find for each tasks a map for Ridge tasks (ie: with northward sun, southward shadows to get visually a better relief's preception and blue tinted snow).
Print the map or display the map on your second monitor

Have fun

137 km - 1 h 26 - Condor Club USYRE
Starting at Bex, the tow plane will bring you near to the "Falaise de Lavey" where you will find a fair lift.
Climb to 2000 m, the max start altitude, and begin the task heading 166° to Martigny and following the left side of the valley. Then it is up to you to find your way to the "Drus" where you will find a lift over 10 m/s and reach easily 4000 m, the "Mont Blanc" 4808 m, the Aravis pass, etc...

93 km - 1 h 10 - Condor Club YSYRE
Starting at Aoste, the tow plane will bring you near to the starting line. Climb to 2000 m, the max start altitude, along the slope of the "Mont Fallère", and begin the task heading 313° to reach "Ferret" pass. Be a little bit patient to reach TP1. Then you will fly along the fabulous south face of "Grandes Jorasses" till "Mont Blanc". Come back is easy at 150 km/h or more.

Staring at Bex, the tow plane will bring you to the "Falaise de Lavey". Climb to 2200 m, the max start altitude, and begin the task heading 147, following ridges' crests to the"Diablerets". All TP are cylinders of 200 m. Then, follow the ridges at 3000 m hight to TP2 and cross the Rhone Valley, using thermals if necessary. Try to stay high. At TP3 try to get some more altitude (3500 m) before going to the Dolent. Coming back to Bex with wind ahead must be negotiated at 13, 150 km/h.
