Pawnee?

Post by Sprunga » Mon Feb 06, 2017 3:09 pm

I think this plane started its life as a Pawnee??, but I can't find any other info. I noticed it towing the Perlan 2.

The Pawnee is a very good tug. We had one at Dunstable and it could cope with really heavy two-seaters. More manageable in rough condtions than a Chippy or a Tiger, and more stable when towing.

I had a tow behind ours once, on a day when the CFI had declared a '500 hr ban' due to a very adverse wind speed and direction . One of our tuggies was an ex Me109 pilot who had lost a leg in WWII (we never mentioned it - the war, that is) - he looked at me across the bar,and winked, and we both stood up and said we were going to fly. I opted for one of the club Ka18s which we had quite a fleet of at the time, and he got the Pawnee out, and off we went.''Wild' was hardly a fair description of that tow, but somehow we managed to stay together. I gave up the battle at 1000ft,and since the ridge wasn't working I did what was more or less a vertical circuit by slowing right down and being pushed slowly downwind such was the wind strength, followed by a high speed dive back to the launch point. No one else flew that day.

Your first sight of a Pawnee was always a bit of a shock, as the wings seemed to be on upside down. Happy days!
