Return of Beastly Soaring

Post by BeastFromTheEast » Tue Feb 10, 2015 7:08 pm

** BEASTLY SOARING IS RETURNING .... ON 20/12/16 **

For newcomers, here is a list of information - to save you trawling through the other Beastly Soaring thread :)

Remit: Friendly, cafe-type soaring, mildly competitive. Usually 18 metre class gliders. All welcome.

When: Tuesday evenings 1900h UTC (same as Greenwich Mean Time)
N.B this will soon change to British Summer Time which is UTC + 1 hour
After start time has elapsed, join time is 10 minutes.

Sceneries:

UK_VFR3
Eden (Northern England)
West & Wales
Central UK HD
Scotland 2.1
Scotland HD
Utah
Patagonia
Alps XL
Alpi 2
Himalayas
Chile
Provence 2
Northern Norway
Arizona
Atacama
Area 51
Irlande (Ireland)
Idaho Montana
Black Mountains
Arc-Alpine
Omarama New Zealand
Jasper-Banff
Cape Of Storms
Seattle-Portland
NEW: California

N.B. If I host a task with a scenery not listed above I will try and give a few days notice to allow people a chance to download it :)

Task time generally ~2 hours (200-300k depending on conditions). I lean towards thermal / wave tasks as opposed to ridge. The tasks I try and author and test fly myself: unfortunately I sometimes haven't the hours in the day to do this, and will use a task from the club website. Either way, I paste a task map or task ID# about an hour before the task itself.

Server name ServerOfTheBeast ( on http://www.condorsoaring.com/serverlist.php )
password fernandezmustdie

N.B. there have been issues with some browsers (Firefox in particular) not automatically launching Condor when the server is clicked on. This thread details a fix : http://forum.condorsoaring.com/viewtopic.php?t=2867 While you can manually edit your registry to make the browser pick up Condor as a program, this is NOT recommended, as you can really stuff up your PC this way.

Teamspeak details http://www.tsviewer.com/index.php?page= ... &ID=979675
Password - Condor's training glider (all lower case, no hyphen)
click through to ServerOfTheBeast room

From time to time I may organise day-long tasks during public holidays or over the Christmas break. These are based on "ultra-challenge" (>1000km) tasks, broken up into several 200-300k legs, and possibly across several overlapping sceneries. You can join / leave at any of the stop off points - fly as many or as few legs as you wish.

Excellent.

I shall resist the temptation to ask "have you got the scenery downloaded?" :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

EDIT: I would like to put the server online at 1900h. I appreciate that this is later than we normally start, but tomorrow is going to be another long day at work.

OK, a nice little jaunt past e2v Technologies in Chelmsford, Airbus Space in Stevenage, RAF Croughton and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Bit later than planned, but heigh ho.

Robbob Ventus 2CX 2:11:55 117.2km/h
AndyS ASG29 2:29:40 103.3km/h
BeastFromTheEast ASW28-18 2:31:28 102.1km/h

I made the thermal conditions a bit trickier to add some challenge: despite everything, I couldn't single out e2v Technologies when I got to Chelmsford, which is a bit worrying as I work there.

Your textures are very blurry at range - what graphic settings have you got set in Condor.

P.S Astrium is right at the right hand edge of of your shot just above the cokpit rim. It the white strip with a black line on it.
The bigger white roof is the lesure complex.

I think they are set quite low ...... although it seems to be the clouds the PC struggles with. It's an old machine and also a former server, which means it is not really optimised for graphics, and doesn't run as fast as 2 3GHz xeons might imply.

Andy,

RobBob landed after 20km. Just restarted server so we can have another go. You have 6 minutes if you are interested.

EDIT: We both completed it the second time. I test flew the task on Sunday and found the wave this time to be curiously elusive, possibly because we were closer to track this time. On final glide Robin had all sorts of fun flying around me, unaware I was watching his every move on the external cameras, and had the shock of his life when I nearly turned straight into him.

RobBob Ventus2CX Ventus2CX 1:51:22, speed 127.4 km/h
BeastFromTheEast LS8s 01:53:48 124.64 km/h

Close encounters of the RAM kind :
