competition for beginner

i have never tried competing yet but that's the next step for me.
is there any good primer about what's involved and how to get started?

Join any of the Monday night contests and just tell them you are new. You will get plenty of help. Don't feel bad if your first attempt to join fails. Its easy to miss the join time due to confusion but just keep trying. You will have a lot of fun in multiplayer.
