How do you make your nice overlays?

On streams you have some really nice overlays showing live data about the pilots. Would you mind sharing how this is done?

I did a Python script reading JSON data from condor and then updating a HTML file which is used as a source in OBS. Is that what you do or is there a more elegant and simpler solution?
