Condor 2 or condor 3 in VR

Post by haltux » Tue Jan 28, 2025 5:45 pm

Hello all,

I know there are several topics around performance in VR with Condor 3, so sorry to create a new one, but I still did not get a definitive answer to my question.

I am currently a Condor 2 VR Player. With my machine (Ryzen 7 5800x3D, RTX 3080), I can play at constant 90FPS and its a real joy.

I am not sure whether I should buy Condor 3. From what I read I will not get the same perf, which worries me. However a constant, clean 45 FPS with proper reprojection should be fine. Not as fine as 90 FPS but still fine. Any dip under 45 FPS, any stutters, and it's in my opinion a complete no go. It's simply unbearable in VR.

So my questions are:
- Is Condor 3 really perfectly running in 45 FPS on a strong machine in VR ? Does it properly handle motion reprojection (knowing I have a reverb G2 with revive)
- Is the improvement of Condor 3 over Condor 2 good enough to justify a step back in smoothness?

For this second point, I am both talking about graphic quality and realism, but especially realism considering I am a real life apprentice pilot and I use Condor to train.

Thanks a lot for your answers

I have a i9-13980HX and a RTX4080 laptop GPU. They have almost the same benchmark. I get 90 FPS most of the time. Steady 45 FPS when there are lots of overdeveloped clouds and I'm looking right at them. In very extreme weather settings (very low cloud base, overcast sky with rain, it drops below 45.

Yes, it is a LOT better.

Thanks a lot for your precise and insightful answer. I guess I can live with some smoothness issues in "extreme weather".

I think Condor 3 might even perform slightly better, in the same weather, as C2.

The important thing to remember is that to enjoy Condor in VR, you don't have to have everything topped out at 1.5x super-sampling, 120hz, 8x MSAA, graphics setting maxed, etc.

(Stable) Frame rate is king. When I see a task with OD, I reduce my Quest and Condor settings accordingly. With a 3070, I can generally hold 72fps in rain and heavy cloud by going .9x resolution, 72hz, 2x MSAA, and mid-level Condor graphic settings. It was a HUGE improvement on fly-ability and enjoyment.

Perhaps someone else can comment with more detail on what Condor graphics settings have the most impact on FPS and which aren't that critical to turn down.

Everything that reduces overdraw of transparent textures. Grass distance, visibility distance and resolution.

Is grass distance only relevant once close to the ground? Or does it matter from regular altitude as well?

No, only when landing. But if you have issues with FPS when landing, you can turn the grass down or off.

Hello, back on this topic to say that following your answers I bought Condor 3 and it works amazingly. 90 FPS, just like Condor 2, at least with good weather.

I was a bit worried following some initial comments on this forum, but it appears that at least for me it works great. It is also very significantly better than Condor 2, both in terms of visuals and flight model.

So thanks a lot for your feedbacks, and thanks for the Condor dev team for their great work.

OMGosh. This. Is. Amazing.

I just purchased Condor 3 yesterday after not having flown Condor 2 in like, a year. At that time, my PC could barely run it in VR without stuttering and causing headaches, plus the graphics looks like they'd been dipped in vaseline.

So super smooth now, I just got done flying the attached flight:

My specs:
Intel I9-9900K
nVidia RTX A2000 12gb
32gb DRAM4
Oculus Quest 2
ASUS gaming router w/ wifi6

Not real spiffy, but I'm getting great results!
