D Drive gone walk about

Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with their 'D Drive' not displaying with Windows 10 please?

I have a Dell G7 and the D Drive was reading very slowly. On restart the computer said it was 'fixing the D drive' and after the restart was completed the D drive was not visible.

I have tried rescanning the disks in the Disk Manger and I have also looked in the Device manager and only the C drive is visible, no D drive.

Sort of sounds like the D drive has died for some reason?

Any basic ideas would be much appreciated otherwise I will take it to the 'guy' to see if he can fix it.

Thank you very much

You can try opening the unpowered laptop and then reseating (disconnecting and reconnecting) the hdd cable, or, if you have an external hard drive usb adapter, try putting the disk on that, connect to the laptop and see if it can spin up.

You can try a 3rd party disk partitioning software instead of windows' disk manager to see if it recognizes it or if it can fix/recover/format it (Recommend gparted because it's free, opensource and you can burn it onto a usb drive and boot it live as an operating system). I've had a case where another program could detect a disk that windows disk manager couldn't detect.

But if the drive is truly dead there's nothing you can really do. If you have important data and no backups, you could hire a data recovery service, but it would be expensive and how much data is recoverable is questionable. If you still have warranty rma it, otherwise you can buy an appropriately sized drive and install it yourself provided it has the right connector for the laptop. Other than the above, I don't see what else a computer technician could do/try.

Thanks for your reply! Just after I saw your post it stopped starting up. So off to the guy it went and found out the mother board is now toast. now I’m missing out on flying my comp!
