Music to Fly By...

Post by Cloud Mariner » Wed May 09, 2018 10:35 pm

I missed out (again) on a Nephi fly out! So, I headed to youtube in pursuit of an earlier idea to look into music that might enhance the atmosphere of a desert - the Nephi landscape is really incredible and inspiring it seems to invoke all kinds of thoughts and feelings - I suppose it's a primitive primordial place that forces all kinds of thoughts and images to bubble up. (or am I just weird?)

Anyway, enough of my windbaggery! Here are a couple of pieces you can find on Youtube:

Arvo Part - Spiegel im Spiegel - seems to be his most well-known. Love how it always returns to the same place
The Dasht e Kavir Desert Persian Trance - a lot of Persian music seems to mimic wind and the natural harmonics found in those environments

What inspires where you fly - I'd love to know! (maybe it's good ol silence)

I have a Pandora channel dedicated to dance music so I can pretend I'm flying in one of Balleka's videos.

I discovered Spotted Peccary Music some years back watching a popular DVD, Redline Sky I believe. They have a bunch of free stuff you can download as well as podcasts of mellow, downtempo, backbeat classical-ish ambient music that imo goes great with soaring. Lots of David Helping, Steve Roach, or Brian Enoch, Craig Padilla... artists like that.

Here's some Spotted Peccary vid samples to get a feel for their offerings

There are a lot of good ambient feeds on itunes too that are less structured and more sound-scapey, some of my favorites are Bluemars, Cryosleep, Dronezone, Ambient Sleeping Pill... and many others. I prefer this type of less structured 'music' and soundscapes but Spotted Peccary fills this niche for soaring quite well imo.
