Definition of Lucky!

Post by Sprunga » Mon Nov 23, 2020 6:27 am

Saw this doing the rounds so I thought I would post here. Very very lucky guys! Video contains swearing (for good reason).

They were lucky indeed, but before that, some bad decisions were made (@1:20)
A kiwi FI posted a very interesting analysis, but it looks like the video has been made private since then:

this link should get you to Pure Glides, Instructor Reacts, explanation of this. He actually worked with the pilots to make this video as instruction. The pilots should be commended for publishing this and helping Tim (Pure Glide) explain moment by moment how they got into this mess.
It is very very informative.

He's indeed the "kiwi FI" I was mentioning in my previous post
Good thing that that video has been made again Image
... because I've seen too much uninformed crap on that topic

Pure Glide is one of my favorite glider youtubers. My comment on the video was something like "the most visceral way to find out what the lee side means" and we who watched got to do it without nearing catastrophe

Condor is excellent at simulating this too. I was flying on the 'Hillrace' landscape. I was a little too low to clear a mountain properly and after flying over the top I found myself flying sideways, back the way I came and being pushed to the ground. Despite my best efforts I could not outfly the downdraft and became part of the mountain. It happened again a month later with another section but this time I survived. Strong winds and steep terrain make this leeward flying very dangerous. Thank goodness I was only flying on the PC. Cheers Jeff

The luck comes to those who are well prepared behind the scenes. Especially in the sky.
This video is pure proficiency which faces the flight challenges.
Thank you for sharing. For a spectator it is a strong emotion as well.

Same approach for every flight.
The U. K. company Skyrora (https://www.skyrora.com/) has launched a risk preventive program leading up to the building and launching of its orbital vehicles. The mobile launch complex allows collecting telemetry data, GPS tracking, weather conditions during flight to which they are currently analyzing. The test also allows practicing launch procedures and recovery operations.
