I remember when i did my 5 hours Tom the cloudbase was 8500 ft, the highest I've ever known it in the Midlands here in UK. I really struggled for a couple of hours scratching around at 1500 feet then I just caught a big one up to 8000. The rest was plain sailing, in fact it took me an hour to get down from 8000 ft. I have an aversion to using brakes to bleed off height, I've bloody fought to get up there so it can come down on it's own. Great days.

lol i wasnt so lucky with the cludbase but a bloody great stubble fire helped, only time i have ever been spat out of a thermal stalled and climbed nose down.... the baragraph trace i still have u should see the climb....

only downside cleaning the ka8 afterwards, lots of burnt stubble attached to it.

i loved the ka8 my favourite scratching machine... woulkd climb and stay up in anything perfect 5 hour machine, did my two bronze legs in a k13 the day after i went solo

Did my silver distance and height in a K8 and landed after 4h 50m when everything died :(

Got to fly the club's K18 for 5 1/2 hours a couple of weeks later :D

The k18 was just about the last of the new fabric design gliders and it was a beaut. the one we had at our club had ben pranged and always flew left wing low but it was a joy to fly.
Wasn't R36 was it? :) I'm sure there's more than one pranged and repaired K18 in GSA circulation. I gained my 5 hours and silver height in R36 at Barkston Heath with Four Counties GC a couple of years ago. They're lovely gliders in my opinion.

I agree with all K8 comments, a nice glider to scratch with. Probaly the most forgiving plane you will ever fly.

Two interesting links, the first what will happen when glue doesn't glue:

The K18 which has k6e wings, 16m wingspan, 34:1 at 74kph. I flew my Silver height at distance in a K18. Here is story if you are interested:
