SGS1-26 index

Post by 6266 » Sun Mar 20, 2022 9:40 am

The index of the SGS1-26 in Condor is 63. Had a look on the DAeC index list and didn't found the 1-26. But there is a 13 m Spatz on the list with an index of 74.

In the Vintage Series the SGS1-26 seems to be unbeatable with this index. After recalculation with an index of 74 it's very close to the Ka6, looks like this index would be better

It is on the 2022 index list, and the Condor index is correct:

It could be up for debate if the index the DAeC calculated is correct. If you can read german (or use some translator) you can read about how they determine the index here: https://magazine.weglide.org/indexliste-2022/

You could use custom indexes for your competition if you feel they are unfair. There are some competitions that do. UWE on his monthly flight uses 70 for the SGS-1-26 (http://213.183.93.145/condor2/index.php). It is your competition, you can make the rules  .

Indexing is unfortunately unfair. The SGS is unbeatable on ridges, but as soon as the thermals are too far apart, you risk of landing out shoots up very rapidly. The DAeC index is designed for "European weather" (read normal conditions in Germany). This means not too high of a cloudbase and thermals in the 1 to 2 m/s range. If you compare the gliders at the theoretical XCSpeeds they achieve in these conditions, the index list is pretty balanced. If you make the thermals much stronger, you'll see that several gliders either get an advantage, or disadvantage from their index.

Thanks wickid for your explanation and the sources. Didn't found the SGS1-26 in the list 2021.

You are right, my competiton, my rules ;-), so I will use from now on 74, the index of the 13 m Spatz. Maybe the 1-26 is flying better in Condor as IRL? Same, I love that plane, never thought this will happen :-D.

The Vintage Series is with very less wind, so no ridges. On task 1 I beat with the 1-26 a very good pilot in a Ka6 with very bad conditions, cloudbase 1100 m, average climbrate less than 1 m/s (maybe 0,7). The advantage with that index is huge. Maybe the OLC mode makes the difference, so you fly where the thermals are, not where the turn points are set.
