Vintage gliders on Condor

Post by davehmartin » Mon Apr 13, 2020 2:48 pm

Hi Everyone

As a result of the clamp down caused by corona-virus my club the Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club, has cancelled it 25 Annual Vintage Glider Rally that was due to be held in June this year.

An idea being floated is to hold the rally on line! This new idea is to invite the entrants to this year’s rally to fly on line at our club using Condor CIub scenery. It would be a first on line Vintage glider rally for Camphill and UK 1st Vintage Glider Rally probably the world using Condor! Although not available for the 1954 World Championship a most popular glider at the rally is the Slingsby Capstan. The Capstan is a side by side 2 seater, popular in the UK in the 1960/70’s. In 1954 the club held the World Gliding Championships. Who knows we could even recreate the soaring conditions from 1954 World Championships.

A major problem is that Condor has few vintage gliders to fly.

It has been suggested I raise the topic on this forum to see if anyone is interested in creating Vintage gliders to fly or if anyone already has them and would be willing to share.

I'm sure I can get someone to make gliders, but we dont know which ones would be useful or popular.

So, let have the discussion and come up with 2 or 3 which should be made.

Guidance:-

- Leave out ASK13 and K6E because we already have those scheduled.
- Only ask for gliders where a flight manual with weights and speeds and performance polar can be supplied.
- No Hortens thank you very much !

How about ze glider zat won zose championships zat year, ze Breguet 901 ?
The only drawback is that some might think it was built on ze wrong side of ze channel

BTW two years later, the late Paul McCready won the WGC with the same glider.

I can't model it it but I know a guy who owns one (and did a thorough restoration) so flight manual, data and pics are available (and I have flown it more than 50 hrs so I could give some advice on the flight model)

Hi Dave,

I am currently developing the ASK13 which Chris mentioned. Just thought I would drop in as I myself am in Derbyshire. (Matlock).

Hi Andy
We are just up the road at Camphill next to Great Hucklow, come an see us when all this fuss is over.

I have acquired the polars and flight data for the Sky that featured in the 1954 event. We have one on site. If anyone would like to develop this glider

I do not see any discussion and coming together on a common wish for planes here.

Even I would say there is very little interest in vintage planes.

At this level I would not put any of our great modellers making these.
