NorthGermany and Poland

Post by 6266 » Wed Apr 06, 2022 5:57 am

To avoid double work I will announce two new landscapes I started to make. The first one will be NorthGermany containing Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (25 x 18 tiles), the second one will be Poland including Kaliningrad (25 x 24 tiles). Got an out of memory error in LandscapeEditor with 25 x 25 tiles, so 25 x 24 will be the maximum for me at the moment, it's the first time I make landscapes.

There will be a lot of airports, but easy. Only flattened with a border around the runway and a windsock, not more.

I like to make historical airports too (f.x. NorthGermany will get one last time used in 1971) if it's possible to see them in the textures. If there are any suggestions about airports, please say it.

On discord for the Vintage Series - see the link in the signature - a section for landscapes is added now, there we can discuss everything about it.

I made a little tool for me to manage the progress of the landscapes, it's online read only and will contain all planned airports.

Don't hesitate and make Poland too :-)

My scenery is cartoonish style with a lot of object. I have almost half done and till now I get over 16k objects.

My landscape will be different, because it don't will have objects except the windsocks. 16 k objects, respect! First of all I''m interested in the North at the coast. My parents were born in Kaliningrad (Königsberg) and Elblag (Elbingen) before WWII. They had to escape 10 and 6 years old in1945 and they never came back. I can't wait to explore their original homeland on that way. That's the reason for me to make this landscape.

I have no idea yet about the most important airports in Poland, so I would be very grateful about every airport suggestion.

Way back, like almost 100 years ago, the glider pioneers were flying out of Grunau, which is now Jezow Sudecki. It's located in the SW corner of Poland and is where mountain waves were discovered. I think it would be nice to experience that area through Condor. I can't seem to find the airports they used on existing landscapes. The ones, I think, I'm looking for are Airport Jezow Sudecki and Lotnisko Jelenia Gora which hosts the Aeroklub Jeleniogorski.

Language is an issue for me as I'm not used to things called different names. Like this area is located in the Giant Mountains that = Karkonosze that = Riesengebirge. Here the Rocky Mountains are just that.

Thanks

On SWPoland2 there will be Jeżów Sudecki (Grunau) airfield, but its tricky because all surface of this airfield is sloped - probably will be able only landing on it, maybe takeoff on winch.

I believe that hill site, Jezow Sudecki, was used for bungee launching and the other airport, Lotnisko Jelenia Gora, is now used for aerotow launches. I don't know how the hill launching is done now.

Congrats for completing such a large map in such a short time!
Thanks. It was only possible by reducing expectations, so there are no objects on the airfields, only a windsock and the border of the runway. With templates and a database for the airports, where I can configure the length of the runway and the distance of the windsock, it takes only some minutes. That's my manually process

Find each airport
Define the coordinates of the airport in LandscapeEditor

Export all airports and import them into the database
Go threw all airports
- define the properties in LandscapeEditor
- flatten the terrain
- adjust the treemaps if neccessary

I started the landscape 5th of april, 2 weeks I was in holiday without working on it. Finished 13th of may. Most of the airfields were predefined in my copy of WestGermany3, only fine tuning left.

A lot of work happened automatically with the tools from soaringtools.org, with 3 weeks downloading time for the textures, getting 5-6 % on each run, because of download restrictions from google. Some hours needed to fix the worst places in the texture. The result is not perfect, but I hope good enough.

On this way it looks to be possible, to do it nearly effective. I think, the average time for an airport is ca. 15 minutes. So 35 hours for the airports and 10 - 15 hours for the rest, 50 hours in netto 3-4 weeks sounds realistic. I always think, that 80 % is enough, so stopping on time saves a lot of time. Expect perfection costs a lot of (life-)time.

I'm now in the process to make Poland (will rename it to NWPoland when finished). See now that it will cost more time with the texture, because it's very bad. 78 Airports are located up to now, will see, if I can reach the same speed :-D
