extracting landscape for training sim from existing scenery

Post by RJM » Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:45 pm

Question: is it worthwhile to create a small(er) landscape for a training simulator that would allow quicker startup?
As we already have at least 2 sceneries available for our airfield, would it be possible to reduce the size of such sceneries to e.g. 50x50km.
Since a lot of effort has been made already for those sceneries, it does not seem useful to redo that only for a smaller extract of those areas.
How to do that?
But the main question is: would it greatly improve startup times between sim lessons?

It is reasonably simple to extract part of a scenery on tile boundaries.
To see if it is worthwhile, perhaps you can time how long it takes to load on your selected scenery and compare the load time of a small scenery. Because of caching where data in memory is re-used, you should time on the second or subsequent load time for comparison.

There is a small 3x3 tiles (57km x 57km) you can try:

2x2 can also be done (35km x 35km).

What landscape and airport coordinates were you considering for a small scenery ?
