Flying without PDA

Post by JeffSmith » Thu Apr 27, 2023 4:07 pm

Hi Guys, I flew a competition task and it has no PDA. Would it be possible to add messages to inform the pilot that he has started the race, made the TP etc. I flew the whole task only to discover that it doesn't have any details and just says "Warmup". At least a start message will inform me that everything is okay and is being logged as a flight. Without the PDA one cannot see the usual indicators. Regards Jeffrey

If you fly without pda, you get a message, when you start, when you turn a turn point and when you finish. Do you know the procedure with the screenshot with the left wing to the start / turn point? Only the finish is recognized automatically

If the result of the task is "Warmup" you don't get any messages. Why does this happen and what causes the flight to be warmup?
If the flight is designated as Warmup couldn't you make a warning message appear after starting?
I was experimenting with different water ballasts to find the optimum load for the glider on that course.

Of course, warm up is before the race started. So you never started the race and got no message. You have to start the task/race with a photo in the start sector at the right time and the right height. If you don't get the message, that the race is started for you, it isn't started.

What kind of task is it you have flown? Is it a usual one with start, turn points and finish?

Information about no-PDA tasks is available on the forum and the search engine works fine

right height
Any maximum start altitude set is not taken into account when using the no PDA option. You can start up to 10 km altitude.

Thanks, that's interesting, didn't expected that.

I remember a championship in 1976 and 1978 IRL of course without pda, where the officials checked the start height from the ground with an optical instrument. But only 15 m planes (club, standard and 15 m class) because of the same wing span. The wings had to fill a frame, if not, the plane was too high.

I agree, but to limit the start altitude, Condor has a very good tool, the penalty zone.
Just as in the Samedan cup where a penalty zone limits the start altitude to 2700m in non PDA flights. And do not fly over before the start of the race...

The race was Samedans Cup 2023-Competition day 6-_CC.fpl

I did start properly at the correct height etc.

Did you start by taking a screenshot of your left wing with the bottom of the turnpoint pole in view? Or did you just cross the start line as usual? In the latter case you did not start the task properly.

I've flown this task a few days before and I wanted to experiment with different water loads.
I didn't take pictures the first couple of times I flew it so why would I have to now?
It's a LS8-sc neo glider not those old canvas and wood gliders with no electronic instrumentation.
Why would it work earlier and not work now? I haven't changed anything from the original task.
Is it because I have completed the task before and saved my flight path?
Regards Jeff

If you fly a task without pda, you don't have the electronic instrumentation. No matter what plane you use. And if you do, you have it, if it's an old or a young plane (only Grunau Baby and SG38 can't have it, if I'm right).

If you flew a task without making pictures with telling start and turn points, it can't be a task without pda. I never flew Condor 1, but it was already there, because the description how to fly no pda tasks is made for Condor 1. And it's the same in Condor 2

Do you have saved the ftr or igc files of the earlier flights? If you have the ftr, you can convert it to igc. In the igc file you will find this if it was a no pda flight

Swift also

You can also open the FTR directly in the flight planner [FREE FLIGHT], [Load], [Flight Tracks] and check Allow PDA in the NOTAM tab, that will save disk space

Therefore I hope in C3 there is option to allow sending info to external device, e.g. XCSoar, for these gliders to be enjoyed more. If it's in real life that most people would bring a similar type of device, when flying these gliders, I guess.

cheers

To be enjoyed even more, you should (from time to time) fly without a PDA. The experience is even more intense when searching for the next airport / turnpoint and final approach without electronic aids.

I like using Condor with analogue navigation technology (tables and maps) and may have last used a PDA in 2021
