Installing Direct Play

Hi everyone,
Could ask for someone's help please (I have done a bit of search but didn't find what I was looking for)? Windows would like me to install directplay for Condor 2. When I had Condor 1 many moons ago I installed it and it screwed up the aerotow for me so now I am paranoid about installing it.
The question is, is it ok to install? I would assume yes, but like I said I'm a bit paranoid
