Using Hall effect switch

Has anyone configured Hall Effect switches to use as a simple switch to replace a mechanical switch?
I want to use hall effect switches on the release but even though the switch output is working it isn't recognised when I try to assign it.
I am using a Leobodnar BU0936 USB board to connect and this work OK for a simple microswitch as well as potentiometer inputs.
Any help / suggestions appreciated.
