How To connect XCSoar to Condor via Wifi

Post by rontheglider » Wed Dec 26, 2018 9:21 am

Connect Condor to XCSoar running both on different devices via internet/wifi connection

1. Install HW VSP3 - Virtual Serial Port.
http://new.hwg.cz/files/download/sw/ver ... _3-1-2.exe
You can choose standalone installation (without Server/Client option)

2. Condor device (computer) and XCSoar device (Computer/Android phone/Kobo Mini) must be connected to same WiFi network /router

3. Note IP address of XCSoar device e.g. 192.160.0.12

4. In XCSoar FLY mode go to Config / Devices / Edit Device e.g. Device A
Port: select TCP Port
TCP Port: 4353 (note this number if different because you have to enter it into TCP Client in HW VSP3)
Driver: Condor Soaring Simulator

5. Start Condor, go to Setup > Options > NMEA Output and check number of the last existing COM port (e.g. COM4). Exit Condor.

6. Start HW VSP3, go to Virtual Serial Port tab and set:
Port name: COM5 (Choose COM number higher than the last existing one in step 5)
IP Address: IP address of Computer / Android / Kobo Mini on WiFi network (e.g. 192.168.0.12)
Port: 4353 (port from XCSoar device A configuration)

Click "Create COM", leave HW VSP3 window in the background.

7. Start Condor, in Setup > Options enable NMEA output and choose virtual com port (e.g. COM5 created in step 6)

8. Start flight!

Next time you want to fly, you only need to start HW VSP3, go to Virtual Serial Port tab and click "Create COM" before starting Condor.

This also works exactly the same if the the device where XCSoar is installed is connected to the local network (router/hub/box) with an Ethernet cable

I'm trying to get this to work, But when I go to monitor the data stream I see nothing and I get a error message when I attempt to reconnect "Device is Occupied"

I recall seeing this before but I can't find anything in the form about that message.

Id be interested too. I find nothing intuitive about setting up serial over bluetooth on windows 10. I got it working once and never since.

I can't believe how easy the BlueTooth option was. Simply set up BT on the PC to have as serial port ("More Bluetooth Options --> Com Port --> Add"), pair the PC with the TABLET Samsung T561 9,5" in my case (from the tablet settings) and then set up XCSoar to point at the paired PC as the "Port" and "Condor Soaring Simulator" as the driver.

I seem to have a hard time connecting PC and Android

HW VSP3 - Virtual Serial Port says Error most of the times.

However, once established, the connection is clear and strong.

Is there an order in which things should be opened?

[edit] apparently, my tablet's wifi kinda goes to sleep if not used by an app.
Turning the tablet's wifi off and on right before pressing connect on HWSP helps a lot

Hello

I have condor connected with an Android tablet with lk8000 successfully.

But what can I do to internal connect in the same computer? (condor -> lk8000 PC version)

Javier , I've just completed a Condor to XCSoar connection , both software packages on the same computer but each displayed on a seperate monitor.
The key is the Virtual Serial Port Emulator (VSPE) software that links the two .
This video explains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkRSyY5t_IA
But this is off topic for the OP so I'll stop there , but after the creation of the VSP its a matter of configuring C2 and XCSoar . So maybe similar in lk.?

Condor and XCSoar on the same computer but different screens

Use VSPE
create Connector COM X which is not used/listed in Condor (X is a number of the COM port)

XCSoar
device A
Port: COM X
Baudrate: 4800
Driver: Condor Soaring Simulator

Condor V1 en V2
in setup / NMEA select COM X
start condor

I have not managed to run Condor V2 in a smaller window and have XCSoar next to it on one monitor....

Possible useful note for Troubleshooting a Virtual Serial Port connection problem.

Using a spare Ram mount on the PC desk, I’ve just fixed up my Sumsung Galaxy J5 and followed the excellent clear instructions in Condor Manual Appendix 5 for using XC Soar on the phone. It worked a treat, thanks Condor. But when I tried again 3 days later, the HW VSP gave continual error messages. After clicking the ‘Create COM’ button, the VSP status got to ‘Created’, but the LAN Status went through “Connecting…” to “Error”.

To cut a long story short, the IP address of my phone had changed. The final number when working was 37, but now it was 36. Apparently the IP of your phone doesn’t remain fixed, so if you get an Error on the LAN Status, try checking if your phone’s IP address has changed. Changing 192.168.1.37 to 192.168.1.36 cured the problem.
