E-glide FES mini competition

Post by Vertigo » Sat Dec 28, 2024 12:56 pm

Hi all,

Id like to try something new; now that we have FES gliders in condor, Id like to try an e-glide format competition in condor. In e-glide, all competitors are allowed to use their electric sustainer for a certain amount of kWH during the race. This opens up a lot of new tactical possibilities and challenges which are not well explored in either IRL or condor, and it also allows us to work around some current limitations in condor (like lack of breeze) to make tasks flyable that would be too hard without FES.

We currently dont have the tools to implement this properly in condor, Condor scores you as outlanded the moment you turn on your FES, and there is no measuring of used battery capacity in the FTR or IGC to my knowledge; so Condor club cant score this properly either, even if Thierry wanted to. But I think with a little manual labor we can get close enough to at least validate the concept: Soaringlabs will score a condor IGC even if you used the FES, and it seems CC will also let you see the task time, even if you "landed out" (used FES). And the miniLAK and Duo have a small enough battery that, especially on a long enough task, we could simply allow using it entirely. The condor PDA can still be used for the most part, even after using the motor, but you get no indication of turned TPs and no applause when you finish...

Using regatta start, you would get some sort of "real time" result, assuming no one cuts any corners ;) But proper scoring would have to be done manually, by sending in your FTRs to CC, and then using CC or soaringlab and a spreadsheet to calculate the actual times and scores, like in the good old days before Condor Club. Because of this, I would restrict this to no more than 10-12 participants. Id like to start with a few individual races or 'training days' to kick the tires and test the concept, and if it goes well, and there is sufficient interest, maybe a small competition (where I would also want to test a few other ideas for a possible future lowlands cup reboot). Dont expect anything fancy, this would be just a bare bones proof of concept.

if you are interested in creating tasks for this, Im open to submissions, that as the combination of weather zones, airspace zones and FES gives us a lot to explore and experiment with.

Looking at the CC calendar, thursday and saturday seem pretty empty. Im thinking 19:45 CET? But if you are interested in participating, please post below what days/time would suit you best.

Ive created a competition on CC where you can register, and that we can use to upload the FTRs:
https://www.condor.club/comp/show/0/?id=833

dont worry, It will not impact your CCrating, thats turned off.

I assume you messed up a copy/paste (could have been worse :D) , and wanted to link to the CC eglide page:

Would you have room and patience for a 'new' guy or are you looking for experienced racers to test the concept?

Not new to soaring but new to Condor.

Of course, especially since this is not a serious competition and more of a "lets see what happens", feel free to join!
I just hope you have patience with me, as I have no idea how to make good tasks for this, dont be shocked if they turn out impossibly hard or way too long or who knows what.

If it's ccRated and doesn't collide with the other major comps, count me in :)

Sounds great!

No its not. And you wouldnt want it to be, because you will "land out" every time (you start your fes).

How do you guys feel about allowing the DuoDiscus FES too?
Its got the same battery capacity as the Lak, but better gliding performance, though of course also a larger handicap. Not sure how that would work out in an actual competition, which may be a good reason to try?

Let's try it in pre-launch.
With WL limit, the difference in performance is maybe not that big (haven't compared polars)?

Ok, lets give it a try. Ill set max WL to 42Kg and will apply the DAeC index to the speeds.
There are a few side effects, like I wont be able to restrict planes in the NOTAM, but Ill just kick anyone from the server who picks an EB29 :)
