Journey of a Million Miles - Now COMPLETE

Post by BeastFromTheEast » Tue Aug 14, 2018 1:00 pm

In the Beastly Soaring slot on Tuesday, I am now going to run a whole series of end-to-end tasks on the Cascade Range scenery region. Not sure quite how many yet but last time there were about 15 legs, all around 200-250km in length.

The tasks have the usual start time and Beastly design ethics. I am hopeful of having a bit more time on my hands over the next few months to evolve them, as I appreciate the quality control has been a bit patchy.

IMPORTANT
Make sure you have the Hangar 7 update installed ..... otherwise the server will not let you join
Make sure you have the 2.0.7 Condor update installed
Any gliders will be allowed but with the distances envisaged you might struggle in the L-13 :) See you 1900h BST.

Turbo-equipped glider pilots read this
If you run the engine before going through the start gate, Condor will not let you start at all. I am not sure what Condor does if you use the turbo after you have started.

Million Miles - progress so far
Total distance flown 4784km

Leg 1 14/08/18 (Task ID UNYFU)

RobBob Jonker JS1C-21 01:48:00 184.30 km/h
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 02:01:09 91.80 km/h (landed at TP2, 185.40 km in)
FrankE Bogumil Beres Diana-2 00:36:32 66.80 km/h (landed 40.70 km)

We welcome Frank E (FAE) from Germany on his first Beastly task. Quite a bit trickier than I was expecting. My excuse was I got an unexpected Skype call just before TP2 and by the time I had managed to cancel it I was on the wrong side of the ridge, a thousand metres lower and upside down.

Leg 2 21/08/18 (Task ID APYFU)
Buzzy Diana2 01:28:12 177.4km/h
JS Antares 18S completed task, results coming
BeastFromtheEast Antares 18S SFOD just after TP2 / just before finish ARGGGGGGH! (both days)
RobBob Jonker JS1C-21 landed about 20k short of TP2

JS seemed to enjoy his first Beastly sortie and promises to return next week. We also welcome back Buzzy (Ivan) after a long absence.

Leg 3 28 & 29/08/18 (Task ID EPYFU)
RobBob Jonker JS1-21 01:33:44 180.8km/h
Buzzy Diana 2 01;35:52 176.8km/h
BeastFromtheEast Antares 18S 01:38:53 171.54km/h
KentClub Jonker JS1-18 00:50:09 153.6km/h (landed at 128.5km)
Kraite DNF (disconnected, network problem)

A good task, and people seemed to be enjoying it. No takers on Wednesday 29th so will see you guys next Tuesday for leg 4 :)

Leg 4 4 & 5/09/18 (Task ID AVYFU)
RobBob Jonker JS1C-18 EVO 01:17:04 187.10 km/h <<<<<<
Buzzy Diana-2 01:18:46 183.07km/h
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S SFOD between Tp2 and 3 ARGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!
(Reflown 05 09 18 01:20:05 180.10 km/h)

Leg 5 11/09/18 (Task ID ADAGU)
RobBob Jonkers JS1-18 awaiting results
IvanR (Buzzy) Diana-2 01:35:42 168.24km/h
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:36:11 167.40 km/h
KentClub (landed at TP1 as had to be free at 2000h)

Another nice task and a bit tricky towards the end with those ridges. I think next week's task will have more of the ridge about it than is normal for Beastliness :)

Leg 6 18 09 18 (Task ID AGAGU)
IvanR Antares 18S 01:27:26 165.2km/h
BeastFromtheEast Antares 18S 01:30:53 158.9km/h
M.One Antares 18S 01:31:26 158.0km/h
RobBob awaiting results .... flew offline after a connection problem

I promised ridges and they were tricky in places despite the whole task being overall downwind. We welcome M.One (Sailplane62) from Italy, who wasn't on Teamspeak but who piped up on the text chat and seemed to be enjoying himself.

Leg 7 - 26 09 18 (Task ID AJAGU)
BeastFromtheEast Antares 18S 01:49:26 129.15km/h
IvanR Antares 18S 01:40:13 101.70 km/h (crashed at169.80 km)
JY1 Antares 18S awaiting stats but landed just short of TP1

Quite difficult, that one ..... I kidded myself that having maxed out Mount Rainier that I was home and dry, but had to surf a few more waves en route to the finish. Had I the chance to test fly that one I might have tweaked the difficulty down a bit.

Leg 8 - 02 10 18 (Task ID YLAGU)
IvanR Ventus-3 01:12:37 162.30 km/h
RobBob awaiting score
BeastFromtheEast Antares 18S 01:14:24 158.40 km/h
&
Last but definitely not least
Sailplane 62 - DNF, but showed remarkable perserverance with the newly launched ASK-21

Leg 9 - 09 10 18 (Task ID AQAGU)
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:25:32 154.4km/h
RobBob Jonkers JS1-21 01:30:15 146.3km/h
Kbelcar Antares 18S 01:11:25 91.4km/h (disconnected at 108.8km)

We welcome KBelcar from Croatia, possibly having network problems. Task is now online if you wanted to refly it.

Leg 10 - 16 10 18 (Task ID EVAGU)
RobBob Jonker JS1C-21 01:25:46 178.70 km/h
BeastFromtheEast Antares18S 01:34:10 162.80 km/h (flown on 18/10 after CBSOD on the 16th)
IvanR Diana-2 01:40:01 153.20 km/h

Back to thermals (after the ridge start) although I didn't get too far initially.

Leg 11 - 20 11 18 (Task ID YWEGU)
Beast FromTheEast Antares18S 01:17:12 154.00 km/h
RobBob awaiting score
KentClub 135km/h (lost flight track after exit)

I thank people for having the patience while I was overwhelmed with work-related XXXX. Some network problems but I got the impression people were enjoying themselves :)

Leg 12 - 27 11 18 (Task ID TBA)
RobBob Started but no results
I might rehost this one :)

Leg 13 - 04 12 18 (Task ID YKUGU)
RobBob JS1-21 01:37:17 129.2km/h
BeastFromtheEast Antares 18S 01:39:14 126.7km/h
TerryF Antares 18S 02:17:16 73.0 km/h (landed at Vancouver International Airport (!) )
KentClub JS1-18 01:56:33 16.8km/h (landed at 32.7km as had to leave the session early)

Quite a good example of a wave task where the first hour is spent travelling upwards. Might stick with wave next week unless people would prefer thermals :)

Leg 14 - 18 12 18 (Task ID AWUGU)
RobBob JS1-21 01:29:17 141.4km/h
TerryF Ventus 3-18 01:30:30 139.5km/h
BeastFromTheEast 01:42:25 123.3km/h
SPR Ventus 3-18 DNF (landed at 13.4km)

Leg 15 - 13 03 19 (Task ID UVYHU)
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:43:06 139.10 km/h
Andy1248 Discus 2 02:19:29 102.80 km/h

Spent quite a while trying to gain height at TP2 - there's strong wave, but there seemed to be more and stronger sink.

Leg 16 - 19 03 19 (Task ID YVYHU)
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:32:23 153.20 km/h
Andy1248 ASG-29 02:01:12 116.80 km/h
KentClub - didn't start, control system problems

Not massively exciting but it does get us within reach of the next mountain range.

Leg 17 - 03 04 19 (Task ID UQAJU)
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:56:32 86.60 km/h

Just me tonight ..... task was quite difficult but I managed it in the end.

Leg 18 (Task ID AWEJU)
Results to be added.

Leg 19 30 04 19 (Task ID YQEJU)
RobBob Jonker JS1C-21 1:20:16 179.50 km/h <<<<<
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:35:00 151.60 km/h
KentClub DNF

I was having problems with the display throughout the flight - it looks like Condor isn't keen on the main monitor powering off with the VR headset connected. I could only see 3/4 of the screen at FS95 resolution

Leg 20 (Task ID YDUJU)
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 01:29:14 148.85 km/h
RobBob Jonkers JS1-21 01:10:43 129.4km/h (landed at 130km)
KentClub failed to start, USB joystick problems from later Teamspeak conversations

Felt a bit lonely plugging away on my own :)

Leg 21 (Task ID EHUJU)

BeastFromTheEast Ventus 3 (18m) 01:14:08 176.00 km/h
RobBob DG- 808C didn't start but flew around task anyway

Note that I have drafted a 300km variant of this task (ID UKUJU). TP4 is moved to the north end of the Warner ridge and the Blizzard Gap turning point is added.

It looks as if you use the turbo to take off it won't let you start

We are 397km from where we started last August so I reckon there will be a couple more legs to go. See you next week :)

Leg 22 (task ID ETUJU)
BeastFromTheEast Ventus 3 (18m) 02:52:38 81.40km/h
RobBob DG-808C awaiting score, tanded at TP4

Leg 23 (task ID AKYJU)
RobBob DG-808C 1:49:20 175,2km/h
BeastFromTheEast Antares 18S 02:01:26 157.80 km/h

Some of the ridge crossings were a bit tricky although RobBob seems to have mastered the black art of starting the task with his engine extended (and it also makes quite a cool ground vehicle once you have taken the wings off).

That is the journey completed ...... nearly 5000km since last August.

Fun and games tonight with Condor servers not working for Ian and myself, strangely worked for Rob, some sort of weird I.P. problem at the Condor end I guess.
See you next week

As discussed on teamspeak, leg 14 will run next week (18th December). I may test fly the task and make a few tweaks as this is another I have not fully tested.

Guys,

I can only offer my apologies but I have been called to a meeting on 6th March and not likely to be back until fairly late.

I will run the task on 13th March (Wednesday week) - it will be a re-run of the one I tried to host last week.

Unfortunately matters totally beyond my control ... yet again :( :( :( :( :(

No Problems Ian. I and hope others that fancy a challenging task will be here. Fortunately a lot going on contest wise in Condor at the moment. But your tasks are always different and a pleasant change from the full bore racing.

Thanks Andy,

I seem to be facing some stiff competition in the server stakes .... hopefully you will be able to make it tomorrow night.
