Messages and VR goggles

Hi,

I love to participate in the Tchin Tchin daily events, but there is something that has been bothering me for some time. Sometimes I see messages that other pilots exchange, and sometimes they are even addressed to me (when I forget the landing gear for instance), but since I use the VR goggles I think I don't have a way to reply. Is there something that I can do to show that I cannot reply, that I am not being rude?

Hi,

some pilots have - VR extension in their pilot name (like Eric Example-VR), then others know that these pilots may not be able to reply messages during flight.

Personnally I use "Voice attack" which enables to send a written message in Condor with a vocal command. BUT it is just a second best for this because :
All sentences have to be pre-recorded so I just use very few entries as hello, bye, sorry and so on. I have also a sentence explaining that I am in VR...
Sometimes when I speak alone in my glider, the app understand something and writes a unwanted sentence...I can say thank you when nothing happened...( I just discovered recently that I can use the functions "stop listening" and "start listening" to prevent this but it needed 2 more buttons and complicates the process...)

It would be great if we could find a working voice to text solution. Then by pressing a button on a joystick we could activate condor chat and enable voice to text , then with another press of a button message could be sent in Condor and voice to text disactivated.

The question is what software possibly combined with autohothey script could do that?

Could windows voice typing do the job?

If anyone has any ideas I would be happy to try it!

Wouldn't it even be better to use voice communication (like Teamspeak or Discord) to avoid spamming the screen with a lot of spoken text?

We are already doing it but not everyone who is on the Condor server is on the same Discord/teamspeak channel.

People like to talk in their own languages and it is hard to be on 2 different channels (the channel with your mates and the race channel) at the same time.

I am not talking about long messages, but just something like 'thank you' when someone types 'CG' or 'left please' if you see someone thermalling in the wrong direction.

You can also speech to text with Voice Attack. But it uses Windows Speech so results depend on how good you trained it...

Some basic commands work best. And you can also assign them to keys or buttons. In Condor you are severely limited with keys though... So a button box works best.

I use 4x3 keys small macro keyboard for XCSoar and Chat messages.

You may need to remember which keys you assigns, but "Hi", "CG", "Thx", and "Sorry" would be good enough.

After finishing a task, I enjoy conversation with typing full keyboard without goggles.

I think I have found the following way to use voice to chat in Condor

1) Press backspace during the flight to open the Condor chat
2) Use win+H to start the Windows voice typing feature
3) Say what you want to say.
4) Hit enter
5) Use win+H to close the Windows voice typing feature.

Autohotkey script could be used to run steps 1 and 2 by pressing just 1 button and then 4 and 5 by pressing another button or even the same button again.

works when Condor runs on screen. Not yet tested in VR

I got a Valve Index and no Problems replying to messages. Of course typing takes a bit longer when you are looking through the small slit between headset and nose. But usually people message before the race opens. So those few seconds dont matter. Developing a speech-to-text feature or something would be way too much effort.

I would appreciate radio-communication via VOIP with a typical radio-distortion though. That would be cool. But also - too much effort for such a small team. Better get other things sorted out first

Inform other pilots that you're using VR goggles and can't reply by setting a message in your chat status or user profile, indicating your limited communication abilities during flights.
