Coming soon, North East Victoria, Australia

Post by jwharington » Mon May 19, 2008 6:31 am

Alanm and I are working on scenery for North East Victoria in Australia. We're in the testing phase right now, and will send out links for downloads soon.

The area includes a good mix of flatland and mountainous terrain.

Fantastic. I will look forward to the download.
I have been trying to create North East Vic myself, only just having used cut jsx script from very large landsat 7. I only have a deciduous map at the moment, but if your landscape is ready to go - I'll ditch my few hundred hours work and start flying instead.

Hmmm - Would be really nice to fly over your version of this terrain too. :) Why not to have two of them? So don't resign please, if u're so far...

A pre-release can be found here:

http://condor.ddcontent.com/NEVictoria07.zip
(240 meg download)

There is some minor misalignment of the forest map and some airfields are missing or not completed. An improved version will come out in about a week.

We are setting up a proper website to host the Australian sceneries for Condor, but I'd like to think it would be hosted on speedbattle also.

Looks like there's a few people in the process of developing scenery for NE Vic (me included). I've been working on mine for a while, but haven't found much time. Maybe we should all contribute to the one scenery.

Just some comments on your scenery jwharington:

- The textures look really nice. I've been spending lots of time trying to replicate paddocks, but I think what you've got looks just as good. I'd like to see some alpine textures though.

- The scenery seems to stretch out well into southern NSW but southwards ends around Mt Hotham, leaving out a lot of the Victorian Alps. My scenery covers Lakes Entrance, most of the Snowy Mountains and the Dandenongs. I wanted to cover as much of the Victorian Alps and Snowies as possible.

- The terrain mesh looks a little different to mine. Did you use the SRTM 90m mesh?

Anyway, looking forward to the scenery. Let me know if you need any help.

Hi Dazza,

I have just produced a new version of the scenery, with corrected terrain (it now uses SRTM90). Everything lines up nicely now and the colour correction is greatly improved.

You can get the new version here:
http://condor.ddcontent.com/NEVictoria08.zip

Someone else is producing the alps region, but I should mention that the technique I use now is nearly entirely automatic; in principle I can generate new terrains for anywhere in Australia in a few days.

Hi jwharington, I tried to down load that zip file but all I get is a bad 136kb zip file.

Is your NE Vic scenery still on offer? I would dearly love a copy, I was a Hang Glider pilot based in Bright for many years so I know the area quite well. It would be a blast to follow some of my old flights in the Ovens, Happy and Kiewa valleys in Sailplane, condor style.

Cheers
Marc

A new version of the NE Victoria and SE Queensland will be up sometime this week, with better colour correction.

Marc, maybe you should try downloading with a download manager if you have trouble. Contact me directly if required.

When you are ready - just send a mail to andreas.kippnick@speedbattle.com and we will mirror your scenery on our page.
