Re: Condor 3 landscape images
Keeping people in the dark is not a good policy.
Informing people of the project's progress once in a while takes minutes at most.
It was said last September that "C3 will be released in 6 months".
As it turns out, it will be delayed. Which is perfectly fine but people have a right to know about it imo.
I am not talking about screenshots or anyithing like that. Just a basic progress update.
I fly in MSFS, where there is lots of development going on. Every developer keeps their future customers well informed.
Yes, there are delays all the time but public knows about them in most if not all cases.

Yes, on the forum, which not everyone reads. (Answering to a question)
I am not sure what you meant by the counting to 6 thing by the way.
The 6 months will lapse mid March.
Again, the delay is totally fine.

One could also argue that more screenshots is not going make things slower neither, and anyway NOONE has complained that the schedule has shifted somewhat. So the development pace is really not the point.
To put things as honestly as I possibly can : I think that Condor is a superb simulator which is amazingly and sadly underrated [edit : and overlooked]. The forthcoming release of C3 is a tremendous opportunity to share our enthusiasm and eagerness to a wider audience which does not watch the eSoaring races on Youtube nor read this very forum (and does not even know what Condor is in the first place).
So sharing more content (it does not really matter if it's WIP) gives the means to reach out for this wider audience and publicize Condord toward new potential simmers. That's what I meant when I wrote "hype" earlier on : giving Condor a better and wider exposure, outside our tiny community.
Sometimes the team's extremely cautious communication looks to me as if it is satisfied with confining itself to the tiny core of simmers visiting the forum, and this gulf with my enthusiasm and "proselytizing" drive probably explains my frustration regarding the communication strategy chosen by the team.

I dont think V3 screenshots will do anything to change that, or anything V2 screenshots couldnt do. What makes condor good isnt really caught in a screenshot. Even if V3 looks a lot better than I expect, an FS2020 simmer, even one that occasionally flies gliders, is still going to shrug. A DCS combat simmer who knows nothing about the challenges of gliding, is going to shrug too.I think that Condor is a superb simulator which is amazingly and sadly underrated [edit : and overlooked]. I think a lot of gamers, simmers and in particular, IL2/DCS pilots, if they had a better understanding of gliding, could be interested in condor. The intensity and challenge of a condor race has a lot in common with an energy management dogfight, but drawn out over an hour or two. But getting them to understand that takes more than a screenshot of any version. I used to fly IL2 and DCS a fair bit in a small squad. I tried getting people there to try condor. It is an uphill battle. Screenshots dont do anything. Even if it looked as good as FS2020 (which, lets be honest, it doesnt and V3 wont either), they are not interested in FS2020, to them, condor just looks worse with far fewer plane types. The lack of a free trial is a major hurdle, but by no means the only one.
Last year I was talking to the grim reapers, a well known youtube squad that flies DCS, IL2 and other combat sims and games. They even flew/tried FS2020, submarine games and a few obscure sims/games . I wanted them to try condor. The idea was I would teach a few of them soaring and racing basics and then we would participate in a race like Tchin Tchin. They where interested, but we didnt get around doing it yet, and with V3 on the horizon, it seemed better to postpone it. I intend to try again this year once V3 is out. That would expose condor and soaring/racing in general to their 400K sim flying subscribers. Thats how I think you grow our tiny community. That, and a free trial version

In autumn, one feature we thought we had working well turned out to need more work, and that has put our schedule behind. We did think we could catch up but that is not possible, so the 6 months estimate is delayed.
I am reluctant to provide any new estimate at this time. Just be assured we are working hard to get it ready.
Thanks for the short update!
I appreciate your hard work and can hardly wait to explore the Alps in Condor 3!
The gliding season is just around the corner, so we can still gain experience in the real world until the release.

greets Mike
Have a look in my youtube channel "Fly Austria" for some glider and motorglider videos.

Re: Condor 3 landscape images
Basically the answer is still yes, BUT they will need to be re-saved using V3 landscape editor. It's not a big issue.
And as I said in the other thread, some things will need to be created anew if you want to have the best use of V3 features.

when they are re-saved are they still usable in C2 or is a copy needed?

it's not only CC, I block ca. 100 GB on my server for sharing my landscapes. So if there are things to do I would like to get that information too (or I wiil find it out by myself)

I couldn't disagree more. Why not advertising with V1 printscreen too then ?janjansen wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 9:55 amI dont think V3 screenshots will do anything to change that, or anything V2 screenshots couldnt do. Condor 3 will most likely be prettier. If any ads can be done, it is better if it's with something as pretty as possible. Of course, no one would start to practice in a glider simulator just for its look, but still it is important. We are not robots. Also, my instructor in real life was teaching me to look outside as much as possible (not fly only looking at instrument), hence the graphism is important.

Re: Condor 3 landscape images
I finished my glider training and I'm thinking about buying Condor 2 to train for my cross country flights, should I buy it now or should I wait for Condor 3? There is almost no information about it that I can find as someone who never played it before, so if I buy Condor 2 now, will I have any sort of discount for Condor 3?

Am currently doing RL glider training - already been solo - and find that C2 is very useful for a variety of skill development and area familiarization (assuming your gliding location has an available landscape on Condor Club.
Found it very useful for practice once the RL instructors have taught the correct technique. (Important to emphasize - learn RL 1st and then practice in Condor! The other way round is all too likely to lead to bad/dangerous habits.)
1. Circuits and landings, speed control being crucial
2. Consistent speed and bank angles for thermalling
3. Working ridge lift (as long as safety remains priority #1)
4. Speed to fly. Set tasks, fly them and then fly against the 'ghosts' of your previous attempts trying various techniques to beat your best time. Higher McCready, optimum height band to work, better thermal entry when at speed, longer glides with fewer climbs... Can race yourself right down to the ground...

There are likely to be significant differences between Condor and RL. Such as:
1. Maintaining a constant lookout is harder in Condor. May be easier with VR however because there's no real consequences there's always a temptation to allow this to lapse.
2. The way Condor gliders and the RL gliders react to the controls. Some things can be tuned (e.g. linearity/sensitivity) but some cannot be adjusted so easily (e.g. the physical effort that may be needed, the location within the cockpit, the amount of movement) but as my instructor says "fly the glider, not the controls". There are, after all, significant differences between even gliders of the same model and larger ones between different model gliders. (Have flown two different Duo Discus 2 and one had air brakes that need much more physical effort than the other. Both need a measurable effort to lock the undercarriage down. Also flown a Grob Twin Astir and the pitch effort on winch take-off is much larger than the Duos, although once off winch it is sweet handler.) So we adjust and adapt, making the control movements necessary to make the glider do what we want.
3. Lack of RL consequences. Depends mostly on mind set. I always fly Condor with the view that it could be a RL flight. No turning towards a close ridge, no approaching a saddle from directly downwind, angling off on approach to ridge spurs, having a landing option available when appropriate and needing to land the virtual glider safely (hopefully at the task finish) and where it would be possible for an economic retrieval. One that doesn't involve an expensive aero-tow or a helicopter.
4. Condor weather is much simpler than RL weather, especially in the mountains. For example Condor wave does not appear to destroy ridge lift - at least not that I've found. Nor will a front sweep across the playing area. Guess we just have to take that into account and ensure we don't try to do something in RL just because we did it in Condor.
Anyway MHO.
