PDA and wind

Post by 6266 » Tue Jul 20, 2021 1:48 pm

Hi,

thanks Pit-R and his statistics I'm diving deaper in the theory to get better in practice ;-)

Found out that the MC in the PDA maybe ignores the current wind speed and direction.

On a testflight with MC 2 m/s and 50 km/h headwind the pda shows that I have to fly 170 km/h.

On a second testflight with MC 2 m/s and 50 km/h tailwind (ok, I'm to slow in the head to only turn and fly back :-D) the PDA shows the same 170 km/h to fly.

I expected that the PDA knows the wind and corrects the MC, but it doesn't look like that.

Can someone confirm, that the MC in the PDA ignores the wind?

Are there things IN CONDOR I can use to get the correct speed to fly?

Thanks for every hint

EDIT: Ah, could searched before, sorry.

As far as I can remember, there is no indication of the speed to fly in the PDA.

The flight director (in the e-vario) ignores indeed the wind for the speed to fly, because, in flatland, the speed to fly (best cruise for a given MC) is not influenced by the wind as the rising air moves with the wind. And, historically, e-varios had no wind information.

It's only when flying towards a fixed point at best L/D that you need to factor the wind in.

However the PDA does take the wind into account when computing the height required to reach a given turnpoint (DDH in screen 3)

thank you, is actually logical, but I wouldn't have guessed it that way.

And found it with a search here too. Remembered your often written and absolute correct hint to search, but AFTER submitting, sorry ;-)

When on the "final glide" PDA page the speed to fly indicator will be adjusted for wind, suggesting a lower speed when there's a tail wind, for example.
