Maximum start speed

Post by Pit_R » Tue Jan 26, 2021 10:46 am

Maximum start speed - is it planned in C2?
IMHO would be nice to have such feature. What's your opinion?

Max start speed with lightly penalized margin, so that a bit faster does not give an advantage, nor a real penalty.

or how about implementing the rules about being in the start sector for a certain amount of time to prevent diving through the gate at vne?

Sure, smthng like -1 pt per 1 km/h over max speed, set by tasksetter, as it is with cloudflying now... :)

mandatory start calls?

and we'll need to simulate all the paperwork too...

As more and more online competitions set limits on start speed (the French Soaring Federation, FFVP, enforced that in the first e-series last December), and one of the participants in this thread has already asked, I will add ground speed in CoTASA in the next version.

Please do not reply here, but in the CoTASA thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=18705&p=174304#p174304

If the competition is managed by Condor Club, this feature is already implemented for GrandPrix (speed at start and altitude at finish). I can consider extending this feature to all tasks.

Hello!
Thank you both Bre901 and BOD1 for your support!
Let's hope some day it will be implemented in C2 too.

In my opinion what we really need is AAT implemented. It is one of the key features of modern soaring sport. Max speed is good option too but it is not the key feature.

AAT is probably too complicated and same time very good handled by external PDAs, so I don't think it is possible.
Max speed could be, I suppose, easier to implement, with score similar as cloud flying penalties are applied...
Let's start with small improvements. :)

Hello,

As curio - max speed rule from Virtual Lithuanian Open contest (scored on Soaringspot):

Maximum start ground speed 170 km/h
Start speed exceeding:

  • up to 20 km/h – penalty 1 pt/km/h
  • from 21 to 50 km/h – 20+5*(exceeding km/h above 20 km/h)
  • more than 50 km/h – no valid start
Could be point to start for potential C2 penalty implementing I guess... :)

The problem may be GS in C2. Maybe it is already calculated (but not visible to us). Let's hope.
"Ground speed can be determined by the vector sum of the aircraft's true airspeed and the current wind speed and direction; a headwind subtracts from the ground speed, while a tailwind adds to it. Winds at other angles to the heading will have components of either headwind or tailwind as well as a crosswind component."

Hello,

in my opinion the best solution is, if the devolpers integrate it into Condor. Now Condor is able to check the start altitude. It is no great work in programming to check the start speed too. If speed is too high the start is not valid and the pilot can make a new try.
The advantage is, that no changes in the evaluation software is necessary inclusive calculating penalties caused by too high start speed. And we need no addional rules for this penatlies, which can be different in each competition.

While starting and flying perpendicular to the startline the pilot can read the startspeed, which is identical to VMG from internal PDA (Page2). Simultaneously he can watch the altimeter. With some practise a perfect start should be no problem. This method can be used for restart.
Without restart the plane, middle of startline and first TP must build a line.
