Performance in 4K ?

Post by Infernus82 » Sat Oct 31, 2020 12:46 am

Hi,
I am building a pc for my cousin, who loves soaring and is gonna buy a PC mostly to play Condor 2.
He wants to play it in 4K, I really couldn't find almost any performance reports, benchmarks of the simulator and such in 4K.
My idea of the build is would be something like: Ryzen 7 5800X, RTX 3070, 32 GB 3600MHz+ RAM..
He'd also play the new MSFS, but that's not that important and I can find a lot of information about that.

From the little info I found, there's really nothing to worry about on this kind of hardware, but I just wanna be sure.

TLDR
What's the performance in 4K on RTX 2080Ti or similar GPUs?

Considering they'll be flying in MSFS2020 just build the system to handle that as that is what will tax the PC most. If the PC can handle MSFS2020 then Condor2 will have no issues running.

The only thing to really consider with condor is that the landscapes can be rather large in filesize so ensure there is plenty of storage, depending on how many landscapes will be downloaded.

Agreed

The disk space required may quickly grow above 1TB.

If a large SSD is too expensive, I would recommend to put only the most used landscapes on the SSD where Condor is installed (I'm comfortable with a 200GB partition for Condor on the system SSD), and store the other ones on an internal or external HD (a USB3 SATA2 HD is "flyable").
If you have enough advance notice it's still possible to move the landscape before the flight, it's faster than downloading and unpacking.

It might be interesting to take a look at the popularity of the landscapes : https://www.condor-club.eu/usedsceneries/233/ to estimate the "fast" disk space required.
One can see that the popularity drops very quickly indeed (I would expect CA to be in the top 3 in November)

Oh thank you, this info helps a lot. Didn't know that they could be that large. I'll get him bigger SSDs

Still wondering how much FPS could we get in 4K, sure you don't know anyone who plays in 4K, whatever GPU they have?

I use a gtx1070 at 4K, never dip below the 60fps adaptive v-sync I have set with all graphics options set to max providing anti-aliasing transparency is set to no more than multisampling in the nvidia settings. If I set any level of supersampling the clouds create huge FPS drops. I don’t know if this is a common problem or something particular to my pc, but I had the same problem with a gtx970 and gtx770. Without v-sync my FPS is around 200 with multisampling in 4K.

Msaa is far easier on the gpu that supersampling. Msaa combined with high anisotropic filtering levels in general provides a high quality image. Supersampling will produce a better image still but due to the way it works it really works a gpu hard. So whikstcall out image quality will be better with supersampling most will sacrifice a tiny amount of quality and go with msaa instead.

When I did a small system upgrade recently I purchased a 2tb m2 drive and a 2tb 7200rpm spinner. I keep frequently used landscapes and condor install on the m2. For less used landscapes I just copy across when needed from the spinner where I store them.

We dont have RTX3070, but I would guess something over 300. Well over the monitor refresh rate probably :)
