UK Airspace

Post by aliran » Thu May 07, 2020 8:51 pm

Hi all, i'm organising a competition next week in the UK and i'd like it to be as real as possible from the perspective of airspace. Does anyone already have an FTR that includes some or all the UK airspace i could use?

Many thanks,
Ayala

Take a look at some of the tasks created on the Condorclub site. I'm pretty sure some of those have airspace restrictions in them.

2018 - Silver Badge complete - Forgot I could claim for the 100km diploma flying an out and return
2019 - Get up to speed and aim for a 300km task?! maybe.....

hi ayala - nice to see you in the virtual world!

condor doesn't really support 'real' airspace - i think the only practical way to run the race would be to request racers use an external PDA with the airspace in (for avoidance) and then to use CU to score it.

I'm sure we have someone

Give me a call if you want to go through it.

Hello
Take one of those maybe...

https://www.soaringspot.com/en_gb/hus-b ... /downloads
https://www.soaringspot.com/en_gb/club- ... /downloads

OpenAir Viewer: https://bitbroker.eu/oav or Seeyou

or this

Anyway - you have to remake them (some, near Husbands) into C2 manually. Eight only possible and no circle shape.
No matter where you go... There you are...

We did these for North-UK2:

https://www.condor-club.eu/showtask/0/?id=14250
https://www.condor-club.eu/showtask/0/?id=13780
https://www.condor-club.eu/showtask/0/?id=13731

What we have done / are doing with North UK tasks is taking a massive screenshot of SeeYou with airspace switched on, putting that as a map in the landscape folder and then drawing penalty zones around the bits we think are actually relevant to the task. ATZs are square though.

It is a shame you can't create circular as well as square penalty zones. I haven't tried it yet but I was thinking about making tasks with penalty zones for the likes of Class A etc airspace infringements. It gets tricky however only being able to create four sided penalty zones and you'd end up with the whole task being covered in a penalty zone albeit starting from X feet up where the airspace starts.

I also guess it depends on the tasks weather settings. There are days down at Lasham where cloudbase is way above what we're allowed to fly however there are a lot of days it isn't. It becomes a balance to only adding in airspace when cloudbase is above it in the task, or you're allowed to take cloud climbs.

I find XCSoar good for airspace, you can always check the IGC files at the end to see if anyone has
breached airspace.

You could also use the tool I have developed to check wether a pilot has remained within gliding range of landable areas.
It can also display airspace (no checks for the time being)
