Integrated wind/termal indicator
Integrated wind/termal indicator
Hi,
I wonder if the devs would integrate the termals and wind in one PDA screen.
It would be very useful fotr those pilots who don't use Xcsoar.
Now I have to toggle between the two screens and it is "dangerous" when flying in the mountains.
Maybe also integration on the map?
What do you think?
Cheers

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
It would be good for VR users, am I right?
Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
...or another possibility in VR mode: A way to integrate XCSoar in the VR sight in any way...
I asked this "option" a long time before the VR was developed by the designers...
viewtopic.php?f=43&t=18151
but until now I haven´t heard of anybody who has made it possible
I really miss the XCSoar in VR flights...

This idea doesnt seem to have any support from other users..Marpilot wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 10:16 amHi,

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
Im sure it does. It has been suggested several times (including by me).
However, having some exposure to xcsoar development, I fear fully integrating xcsoar is not realistic. While xcsoar is opensource, even seasoned devs frequently dont manage to set up the development environment to successfully compile it despite their best efforts and purpose built VMs. The main dev appears to have made it deliberately complicated to maintain his control. As a result, since the main dev seems to have largely abandoned the project, xcsoar development has completely stalled.
Flat panel users should just use a second screen (monitor, laptop, tablet, phone..) and for VR users, I think a better solution is to "project" the xcsoar screen on to vr goggles. I believe oculus dash has this functionality?

You misread.
I'm refering to showing wind on thermal screen

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
Looking at the thermaling track, it is obviously by the drift what the wind direction is.
Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
+1 for a simple wind indicator (direction and strength) on the PDA please, very useful for wave and ridge flying as well as thermals - also very important for teaching circuits on our simulator. A simple arrow and number would be fine. Please not XCSoar on the PDA, my eyesight and the resolution in VR is simply not up to it!!
Pretty please....

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
To be clear, there already is a wind rose screen on the pda showing direction and strength. Just press the thermal helper button twice.
The problem I have is having to constantly switch between that screen and the map

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
Exactly.Happy to see some input
Let's hope devs will add wind arrow to map - as option.
Cheers

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
Yes, I would like ,if XCSoar VR implementation not possible, at least the wind arrow shows in the map and/or in the thermal indicator.
If you fly straight, or in a ridge or wave, you have to constantly switch between screens, and sometimes it´s a bit risky...
And there is no wind drift in such case

Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
I would add my agreement that a wind direction arrow in the PDA screen is desirable. I don't use X-soar and i never got my Oudie 2 working with Condor 2. Now I'm into flying in VR mode so I just use my familiarity of the topography with relation to the wind direction set in the weather input. A lot of times I find I guessed wrong.
Re: Integrated wind/termal indicator
+1 for small wind arrows.
Esp. there is place under averager. On pda map maybe similar to RL tools - top corner?
Arrow on map PDA would be worth to have esp. for ridge flying. Quick drafts to visualise what I mean:
