SBC 08-09

Post by 19 » Sat Mar 29, 2008 5:27 pm

Hi,

If we continue into next year... I would like to see the same settings that we saw in Gladiators of the Sky i.e. no outside viewing and a very short distance view of other gliders, please!! this would make it more realistic and fun. :D

Any one else agrees with this??

Cheers,

Sean. 8)

yes, as you can get some limited information using the external network player view.

Hi 19!

Hi 19!

The more similar to the real better and more fun is the competition! Value more work for everyone, especially those competitors!

It would be interesting also establish some minimum criteria for a creation of the races of the next championship! For that all competitors can start the race on equal! With a Start Gate short or better yet Regatta! Among other things!

Long start gate is because Seeyou sees the gate as open after Condor has closed it (correct me if I am wrong) which allows starts after the gate closes to be scored.

In the simulators it is always exist a tradeoff between realism, fun and technology limitations. As you might remember we already started SBC08 with 1 km distance view of other gliders and it is appeared that practically all flights looked like offline ones. This is because without icons other planes practically not visible at the distances more then 1 km even with rather good screen resolution 1024x1280. At the same time IRL other gliders are visible very well at the distances of 5 km and even more. So such limitation don't increase the realism but dramatically decrease the fun. Outside viewing also doesn't give you any advantage in the competition but reduces the fun. Finally if somebody wants to fly with maximum possible realism then he simply can avoid using of these "unrealistic" features. This is up to the pilot. If we'll insist to the maximum possible realism then we could come to the proposal that each pilot should have as mandatory equipment joystick with FFB, rudder pedals, 360° spheric computer screen around him, teamspeak, etc.

So i strongly disagree with this proposal.

I agree with Sean, or even better, no icons at all.

Agree.

I frequently fly with Icons off for the extra challenge and realism. What I would love to see is a few non-PDA flights, where some dead reckoning and map reading are required.

Good luck. But without me. I don't want to fly absolutely unrealistic tasks where other gliders are not visible on the distance more then 0.5 km.

I don't like it, I want to have as much fun as possible.
And this doesn't mean imitating RL as much as possible.

If in RL I would be able to see gliders with an icon 10km away, I would definately sign for that.
It makes me more aware of what I'm doing, racing, increasing the stress and therefor the joy.

I know a lot of people disagree, but I just don't like it to see nobody at all and after finish know what you did.
That's the thing I don't like about SBC either, not knowing what you did even after finish.
But because the timezones/multiple servers make it much more interesting for alot of pilots.
I think this is an acceptable loss (for me) for a good cause.

I myself get more and more the idea that people think they got beaten becasue others could see them.
Nothing about realism orso, might be completely wrong though.
But I myself, would see it as a big loss of condor competitions.

although sean only asked if people agree with his thoughts,
I thought it would be good to show the other side of it instead of only showing the ones who agree ;)
Think positive, flaps negative.

I am still new to SBC,
but I myself think that sticking with the settings of SBC08 is just fine.
My visibility in RL is about the same in SBC(5km).
I'm a below average pilot,
and even if I can see what the top pilots are doing,
I can't imitate it, so it won't make so much difference.
Especially in only thermal tasks,
I'm not good at centering thermals, so even if I find a good thermal it takes more time to climb then the top pilots.
and besides, whats the point of flying online, if you cant see the others??

I really hope there is SBC09
