In anticipation of the old wooden gliders which will be coming in the plane pack I decided to see if a 500Km was possible in the the K13. I completed it, 516Km, (entirely in thermals) in 5hr 55 mins. Got very low (below 700m ASL) twice and thought I wouldn't make it, and also did a Gold climb later in the flight. More of a challenge than I thought it might be.
Where is the plane pack? It was estimated to be out by October I think.
500Km in a K13

I think I made about 87Km/hr which I guess is not that bad for the K13. I'd hope to go quicker in a K6CR or a K6E if we ever get them.
It wasn't a specially good day. I used the same weather as I used for the 1000Km over the same course (you do it all twice in the 1000) and the thermals were really spaced to suit an ASW22 so I had to pick my thermal very carefully and get there before it expired. The K13 is painfully slow between thermals. At least the thermals were +5 when I got there. I used twenty six thermals on the trip. Twice I had to climb over 2000m and once 3000m to get back to a safe height. This kind of trip requires you to get high and stay high. Easy enough in glass but less so in older ships. The 1000Km was actually easier.
You should try it some time. I'll send you the fpl if you like. It wouldn't make a good hosted task as it is far too long. SWMBO was away on a trip so I spent all day on it.

Well you won't manage it in thermals because the day isn't long enough. I don't rate these tasks if you just roar up and down a long ridge. Real pilots wouldn't do that in my opinion. You have to do it in thermals.
If you need another challenge do the Diamond height in a K13 on the task set by BOD.
Personally I'm hoping the plane pack has some nice wooden gliders like Ka6 and Ka8 etc. When we get them we can have contests for old-timers like me. Much more fun I think.

5+ thermals renders your flight pointless
The first time you'll get a Microsoft product, that doesn't suck, will be the day they start producing vacuum cleaners.

Why? I've flown in 20 up in the UK (in cloud), and 5 up was the usual in the summer in a good thermal.Flightbase wrote:5+ thermals renders your flight pointless
Condor tasks and competitions are totally unrealistic as you well know. I would have no more thought of declaring a 500K in a K13 in RL than declaring I was going to the moon. When did you ever fly in the UK in the kind of uniform thermals there are in Condor? Even in South Africa I never saw such regular thermals and I did see some pretty rapid updrafts there.
