I guess the plane you were in (I assume it was a plane...) had engine(s) ?
Remember :
Real pilots don't need engines...

Yea it's true, but with luggage and shortage of time it's very hard to fly with glider on long distances.
And you aren't allowed to land with glider on internacional airports such as CDG.

Here's a shot of a recent flight I did. I had to capture it on replay as it happened so fast during the flight. On my way up to 14,000 feet, I hit a very strong thermal on the back side of a ridge that peaked at nearly 18 knots
. Eventually it settled down to 9-13 knots, certainly made climbing easier
