Oculus Rift

It would be great if at some point Condor were updated to support the Oculus Rift which is a low cost ($300) high quality Virtual Reality headset with built in head tracking (6 DOF): https://developer.oculusvr.com/ . Initial reviews of the Development version are very good, and the consumer version (est. Q3 2014) will have much higher resolution.

People have started to try and convert programs that do not support the Oculus Rift. See http://vire.io/ . However, this relies on modifying the DirectX DLL which would likely prevent the ability to play multi player (as cheat detection programs may think it was a "cheat"). Thus, native support would be best.

I hope this is something that the developers could add without too much work!

My slight concern about this headset is that is seems to be quite large compared with some of the others on the market, and I have a nasty feeling the consumer version will be considerably more than $300.

I can confirm combining VR goggles with a decent head tracker makes for a very involving flying experience - although my tracker is one I built myself

Condor engine is older and it isnt possible to use 3 d drivers.

hey - more and more excited, can't wait for the release of the Oculus! Any update on the feasibility on the Condor side ?
I have seen a guy in a forum asking the Oculus team a way to interface with Condor, but no news since last May:

Oculus dev kit 2 (light years ahead of dev kit 1) is available for $350 and is more refined than Crystal Cove units in some regards. It kept the 75hz 1080p OLED running their 'low persistence' technique to eliminates motion blur and retains the IR LED marker array for sub millimeter accurate 6DoF tracking, but those are now hidden under black IR transparent plastic.

Hi guys,

You might be in luck, if you own an Android phone. I'm very excited to present a beta for an app I am working on, which transforms your phone into a VR device. Results so far are pretty good, and improving. I've just posted about the project here: http://forum.condorsoaring.com/viewtopi ... 45#p145167

You can check a video demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=994j9agMc0s

Enjoy!

Well, contributions are welcome :) you can use the Paypal button on my site (bottom of navigation bar, at oddsheepgames.com). I also appreciate other forms of support like testing feedback and sharing the news at your blogs, other forums, or with friends and family :)

I have just updated the download links with the latest version, which really... really (really) improves on performance and efficiency. Here's some stats from my testing:

Setup: i7 laptop, average 2.4ghz router, fast resampling mode on, with Dear Esther game (Condor got me similar results, but I usually test with Dear Esther, as it is quicker to prepare)
With Xiaomi Mi2 phone, at 640x720 resolution: around 40fps with 25ms lag (that's pretty good, imho)
With Galaxy S4, at 960x1080 resolution: up to 20fps with 65ms lag (which is rather bad, but note that this is at higher resolution than Oculus Rift devkit 1!)
(The S4 gets better results, at same resolution, than the Mi2).
Your results will vary, depending on the hardware... a powerful desktop will definitely improve on those. Let me know!

Cheers

Hi is Condor in 3d? I think no..., but also it is amazing...my Rift DK2 is here, but it is not possible to use it with Condor....really sad...ad Condor is possible to run in 3d too but only with old drivers. .....it vould be awesome to build for rift small aplication for condor rendering on rift dk2 and emulation of 6dof tracking...

Hi HornetSk,

I don't think there are any tools that let you do stereoscopic view with Condor (at least not TriDef nor Vireio), but I'm not sure 3D is that important for such game: cockpit aside, everything is far away, so 3D perception would be on the low side. I do not know if Oculus Rift supports single image as input (and then duplicates it), for a fake 3D effect (I know Android Rift does though :) ).
As for tracking support, I think you might be able to get something working with FreePie. I haven't really played with it, but I think you can setup Oculus Rift input to convert to an output like FreeTrack (which Condor accepts).

Cheers

Hi guys - I have an Oculus Rift DK2 - and am trying to get Condor working on it ( but not in 3D ).

There are a few Oculus programs including ones meant to play video , that enable the desktop and sometimes games played on a big virtual screen. If I can turn of the head tracking part of the program - so that the virtual screen running Condor is `stuck to my face ' and I can get the tracking from Oculus to work in Condor then i may have a VR solution for Condor that works.

I have downloaded Opentrack which can feed 3 DOF info from Oculus into Condor in 'Freetrack' mode .

There are clearly some problems to get all this working but I hope it can be done .

First will be to get tracking from Oculus to work in Condor .

If anyone is experimenting in this too I would like to hear .

I would hope that anyone working on Condor 2 will have Oculus in mind as they will be low cost ( subsidized by Facebook ) and they will be common in the future . With increased resolution and lighter head set they will be the choice for flight simming.

Mark
