PlaySeat VR Simulator

Post by k6chris » Sat Oct 03, 2020 7:06 pm

I've been playing with the idea of using a second-hand PlaySeat as the basis of a VR simulator for some time and recently one came up for sale locally. Playseats are widely available and are used for car racing sims, with the addition of a steering wheel, pedals and optionally a hand brake or gear lever. The Playseat has three parts, a bucket-style seat on a metal frame, an adjustable platform for pedals and an middle support where the steering wheel is ususally mounted. All these elements can be adjusted for different size people.

For the VR glider sim implementation, the stick and airbrake are mounted to a plywood section that fits between the seat and the seat frame. The stick is a modified PC joysick, using the throttle potentiometer to drive the airbrake lever. The rudder pedals are simple homemade bottom hinging pedals, using a BU0836A Joystick Controller to convert the potentiometer movement to a Condor friendly signal and to drive the 4 buttons on the panel, The panel itself only has 4 buttons, the two largest being for release and wheel retract. It's a simple panel as you will have a VR headset on! Flaps and trim buttons are mapped to existing buttons on the joystick.

It's only a prototype at this stage, but the PlaySeat does provide a very good basis for such a project. Thought / comments welcome.

Looks great!

Might want to look at the angle of the seat. Block up the front of the rig to angle the seatback?
