LOW-END glider event – The Storyline

LOW-END glider event – The Storyline
After the joyful month December, whit its Christmas turkey meals and its new-years champagne and fireworks, we are now facing the long, dark, boring first months of the new year, eagerly waiting for spring to arrive.

In the meantime, what better to do then meet up with some old friends for a few nice sessions of Condor, flying all kinds of gliders through various sceneries all over the world whilst having a nice conversation on TeamSpeak?

Flying in Condor is virtual, and so is this storyline. Any similarity between the characters mentioned here and real life is just, well, kinda coincidental….

The storyline might contain some clue’s about the tasks, so be sure to check it out once in a while.

After a long travel to Lesce-Bled and rigging those heavy open class gliders we went to the local bar for some drinks. Apparently, the Slovenian word for cheers is "hura". So if you ever get to celebrate something in Slovenia with a bunch of duchies, be prepared for a lot of drinks.....

See you all soon!

Day 1 was a nice flight, all pilots made it home with good speeds. The finish ended in the usual pile of glider parts as the "first land, then de-rig" rule does not apply to Condor :) After packing all the open class glider pieces in crates to ship tem to the other side of the world for later use, we finally hit the bar for some well-deserved drinks. SOI tried to explain the bar lady that the Slovinian word for cheers (Hura) does not only sound like the dutch word for hurray (hoera), but also sounds like something... different.

The good news is, the bar lady had a good laugh about it.
The bad news is, her boyfriend was less amused. Luckily, we succeeded to get SOI out in one piece, and started packing for next trip!

Next flight will take us to Southern Norway for a more challenging task. Should you land out, beware of the moose. The farmers daughters are friendly there, even if they are difficult to understand. Just do an impression of the “Swedish chef” from the muppet show, they really like that.

Major warning in advance, taxes on drinks are high in Scandinavia, be sure to use the tax-free shop on the way there!

After a nice trip from Slovenia to Norway we ended up in Kaupanger, the start field for our next flight.
I started planning the task and showed it to Knut, a local veteran glider pilot. He replied: Tu da diddie dom tiduridu, twida di dia ti dum, burk burk
burk! Not much of use, but his hand signalled something like hills and ground level meeting up somewhere during the task. Hmmm…
After visiting the local sauna, SOI bought one of those vicking helmets with horns on it and tried to impress a moose. Apparently, the moose was even hornier then SOI, and had a go at him! I’ve never seen SOI run that fast!

See you all tomorrow (Thursday), briefing here in the forum at 19:00 CET, server open at 20:00CET!

LOW-END glider event – The Storyline

Day2 was supposed to be more difficult, and as a consequence, not all pilots made it home. 76 (me) crashed into a hill without any reason, just not paying attention. ZA and 74 played a game of angry birds (the Norway sceneries have birds above the trees), and the birds were stronger!

SHT was only 4.2 km short.

CG WD! Please post your victory speech in the “participants comments” forum :D

To forget all this misery, we headed straight for the local bar.
The DJ was playing Lordy (former Norwegian song contest winner) all the time so I asked for something else. The DJ replied: Tu da diddie dum tidudidu, twida di dia ti dum, bjork bjork bjork!

The music he played next had some nice melodies until the lady started to sing….

We all sat around a TV and watched an old monthy python movie called “Eric the vicking”. SOI took his vicking helmet, had it filled with beer and passed it around. This sequence was repeated over and over…
As we could have expected, my warnings about the price of alcohol have been ignored and now we are faced with a bar-bill we can’t pay! So the angry bar lady called the police and while they escorted us to jail, ZA noticed a 24/7 pawnshop. He managed to trade our iPaq’s for some cash.
The good news is, we don’t have to sleep in jail!
The bad news is, next task will be a NO-PDA task!!

See you all in Northern Norway!

Helmut and me flew the task together sometimes very close to the dangerbirds within this scenery. The task was challenging and a mixture of fast ridge flying and using therrmals where I was a little more lucky than Helmut on the last leg.

I remembered the norwegian veteran’s warning about “burk” so I climbed for final glide with a safety of 200m which was just enough to pass the last hill and made me sing “Tu da diddie dom tiduridu, twida di dia ti dum, burk burk” when on safe glide to the field.

The later party in the local bar was even more challenging, SOI’s horny helmet being full of beer all the time. In Norway we know the price of beer is incredible, but as SOI and the bar lady have both been away together, I believe most of the bill is not the beer……

Anyway, we all had to pay and lost our GPS Navigations to the pawn shop. At least we could convince SOI to help us on the next task and play the “pathfinder role” for us.

So the key to success is Follow F9! Thank you for sharing that WD, and also thanks for clarifying the mysterious absence from SOI last night! :)

We went to pick up the remains of the gliders that were left between the trees last flight after the bird incident. These are big birds, and it took a lot of time to polish the bird sh1t of the wings.
So with sore arms and shoulders, we decided not to go to the bar this time, but go to the sauna and get a relaxing massage instead.
These Scandinavian girls are beautiful, and sure know how to give a good massage! Of course, SOI had to ask for “a happy end”. The girl just smiled and nodded yes with great enthusiasm. She walked out of the room, and the rest of us discretely left as well, but then we saw a huge, hairy Norwegian lumberjack enter the sauna. With a big smile he said to SOI: Tu da diddie dum tidudidu, twida di dia ti dum, jerk, jerk, jerk? While he moved his hand as if he was trying to get the last drop out of a bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup. No idea what happened next, but SOI left the sauna screaming, running even faster than during the moose incident.

So we just packed our stuff and headed further north, to the field where we will start our next task, Elvenes. As usual, I set the task and showed it to Öle, a local veteran pilot. His reply was: : Tu da diddie dum tidudidu, twida di dia ti dum, dark, dark, dark! And while he said that he made a circle with the thumb and fingers from his left hand and pointed at it with the finger from his right hand.
Of course I didn’t understand, but either he tried to tell me something about the sun, or he was calling me an asshole…

See you all next Sunday in Northern Norway!

As far as I can tell, nobody was lost without their pda, and the old skill of flying with map and compass is still amongst us.
Too bad E20 got too low to use the ridge… Picking him up was easier by boat than with a car :D
WW was less than 2km short, if only he had aimed a bit to the side he would have been in the finish sector.
Retrieving him was easy, just push the glider, no car or trailer needed.

And CG SHT! Very good speed for a non-pda task! Please post your victory speech at the “participants comments” topic.

It’s time to leave beautiful Norway, and head for another northern part of Europe, Scotland. We will be looking for a Monster there……

Another bit of general advice, do not use the toilet after SHT. Damn, Thijs, I said Scotland, not scatland....

We have all been invited by E20 (Andy) for a nice meal of Haggis! (See the participants comments topic)
I always thought that haggis was a sheep stomach filled with whatever was left on the floor of the slaughterhouse, but according to Andy (and backed up by Wikipedia) Haggis are actually cute animals that live in the Scottish hills. Apparently their legs are longer on one side to compensate for standing on the hills all day long. Wiki also learned me that January 25th is the traditional Burns supper, in honour of the poet Robert Burns that wrote an entire poem about…. Haggis. If I had known that before I would have set our schedule accordingly, but I’m sure Andy will get us a good tasting beforehand!

See you all next Thursday at Inverness, starting field of our next task!

Tonight we will be scanning the Loch Ness lake searching for the mysterious, mythical Monster.
It should look something like this:
monster.jpg
So i set a task that will let us cross the lake several times, with several eagle-eyed glider pilots we should be able to solve this old quest once and for all!
However, I really need to do more research about the locations I choose to fly…
Turns out Scotland is not just known for its Haggis, Whiskey, man in skirts and bagpipes , its also known for its fog!
Expect to see clouds today, loads of clouds!

And don’t forget, Andy invited us all to a haggis party at the finish field after the flight!

Day 4

The low clouds took some victims, all pilots performed an outlanding… I felt I had to prove something so with great care I scraped cloud after cloud and managed to reach 80 km…
Please post your screenshots of the monster if you found it!
Retrieval was fairly easy, and soon we were all in the local bar tasting the haggis that Andy arranged for us.
WW had to prove why he uses this callsign and kept ordering double shots of scotch. After a while he got very drunk, fond some old bagpipes and tried to play the Dutch anthem on it. It sounded just as awful as any bagpipe… EDB got in a fierce fight with a very old, kinda grumpy guy. No idea what it was about, but one kept screaming “Apple Macintosh!”, the other kept screaming “Screenshot!”. While they were rolling back and forth over the floor, SOI tried to convince the bar lady that he had found a one-eyed loch ness monster in his trousers….

The good news is, we all got away before the police arrived.
The bad news is, those pictures will go viral on facebook and hunt SOI for a long time!

After a miserable night of sleep (eating haggis late at night causes strange dreams about monsters)
we packed our stuff together and set course for our next destination, Canada!
The nation that gave us Celine Dion and Justin Bieber!
With the horrible cloudy task still in my mind I set the task for next Sunday and showed it to a local veteran pilot. Unlike in Norway, I could more or less understand what he said (which is a relief because a lot of Canadians seem to speak French.)
His reply was: “That task just looks aboot as easy as a Canadian high school girl on prom night, eh?”
I have no experience with Canadian girls so I still don’t know how easy or difficult this task will be…
It’s a classic 300km FAI triangle. Legs one and two will take us along the sun and wind side of some ridges, last leg is against the wind.
Special request from SOI, we will fly this task in the non-flapped 18m gliders. These gliders are hardly being used after plane-pack 1 added the flapped 18m gliders. Please select a Discus2c, LS8s or ASW 28-18 for this task!
