New to Condor
New to Condor
Greeting all.
I'm new to Condor but am having a ball learning the
new skills required to compete in races.
For now I'll keep practicing and get proficient.
I do find myself getting totally absorbed in flights though.
Alas I sometimes run out of lift but I'm getting better.
Next things on my list are Downloading other tracks, ghosts,
Scenery and ultimately online racing.
All the best
PS:is it considered bad form to have music playing quietly
in the background during flights?

If you want performance on your flights, better not have music running.
I had "Sultans of Swing" in my PDA (real life) as finalglide tune.
But I was so busy that I got distracted by some strange noise in the background..
It appeared to be my own finalglide tune...
So what was supposed to be for my pleasure only distracted me from my task.
Scenes like the Iron Eagle testrange won't work in RL I think.
I do like music when flying some crazy flyby's or ridge racing, but there performance doesnt seem to be the problem...

Think positive, flaps negative.

Hi Edge,
Welcome to Condor - addictive isn't it?
Get online as soon as you have reasonable control of the glider - don't leave it too long! - You'll learn much more quickly. Feel free to join in any Team UK activity that you see going on (although we seen to have been a bit quiet recently)
Also, if you have not already flown RL, you might like to dig out your local Gliding club and have a go for real.
The other situation I'd be wary of, is that in some cases we use Teamspeak software to talk to each other when flying. It would be offputting to have music in the background of your transmissions there.

That depends - sound is one of the clues that you have when flying. The audio variometer, the noise of the air passing the glider (and the lack of that noise just before the stall!). I'd recommend not playing music loud enough to interfere with your interpretation of those sounds.Edge wrote: PS:is it considered bad form to have music playing quietly

SteveK - I'll make sure to check out Team UK soon.
Smithcorp - can you suggest a nice scenery for a first download?
Flew against a ghost last night although soon left him/me for dust as it was yesterday's flight so I must be improving.
Also downloaded a silver badge track - Silver SW slovenia (Slovenia) - is this the right one?
http://www.condor-club.eu/showtask/0/?id=135
To my horror it has no PDA!!!
How the hell am I gonna find my way there and find turn points?
I do like a challenge though as there seemed to be plenty of lift around.
Thanks again...

Doing a silver is a good way to start. You need to take screenshots (S key) at turnpoints (look over wing as you turn, press S key, you'll hear an acknowledgement - there's also a thread about doing tasks with no PDA, you can also turn on task helpers).
Good thing about a Condor Silver is the duration's a lot shorter than real life. The height gain's usually the trickiest if the cloud base is low, so find a good thermal, lose plenty of height, then scratch back for the gain, then go do the task for the distance.
For which scenery to get - take a look at the servers that are up and note the most popular ones. I find you have to have lots - don't get disheartened if you get bounced from a server when you try to join, with a "using modified scenery files" message. It usually just means you don't have that scenery loaded.
Some of the Swiss scenery is lovely as is the freeware Alpi.
Have fun.

Welcome Edge,
Get all the sceneries you can from Condor Club, you'll need them if you are going to race online.
For the silver task you'll have to navigate the old fashioned way, using a map, but choose a task with turnpoint helpers enabled so you can at least see the poles. To start make sure you are in the start sector, look over the left wing and dip the wing so you can see the bottom of the pole, then press S to take a photo. You should get a message that you started the task. Then just fly to the finish, you don't need to photograph that, just fly through the pole.
When you feel ready join us online, we usually fly 3A's Boring Sunday Tasks on a Sunday evening and you can find us in the English Channel on Speedbattle Teamspeak.
