Ridge and Slope Soaring

Post by Lenticular » Tue Aug 01, 2017 7:33 am

Hi,

Is it possible to do ridge and slope soaring in Condor, as well as thermal soaring?

Thanks!

While ridge soaring is possible in Condor, it has to be said that it works only in sceneries with very high and steep slopes. In quite a few sceneries, the UK for instance, slope soaring is not possible in the current version of Condor. The video (where was it taken?) is not typical of what most sceneries will provide.. You will not learn how to scratch away on a realistic ridge waiting for the next thermal. Whether this deficiency will be fixed in Condor v.2 remains to be seen. I am hopeful, because this skill is vital to many a cross country flight, and no RL pilot will have a successful C/C career lacking it. I speak from personal experience.

I was interested in Alps scenery so it isn't such an issue.

Is there no slope lift at all then, in somewhere like the UK? :?

Yes I am afraid that is the case. As I now only fly in UK scenery I have only a few comments to make about other sceneries. There are some ridges in the French sceneries which are soarable though - Provence has some. I have done a 500K without circling, on ridges in Provence. What I do not know is whether these ridges are actually realistic - i.e. have not had their slopes increased by fiddling the software.

You should be fine if you stick to Alpine scenery.

That's a shame.

I've been flying the stock scenery for the last day or so, and found the regions of lift on the slopes to be rather small, in addition to massive sink on the leeward side - it's almost as if it is backwards (in area and strength).
