We're back with next small flatland competition.
Something for fans of slow'n'lowland flying. "If It's Thursday, This Must Be Belgium"

As usually: you can expect cloud bases between 1200 and 1700 m, climb rates between 1+ - 2+ m/s and an average speed about 90 to 125 km/h. Please adjust your tactic to these conditions.
ATTENTION: Finish (r = 3km) min height

Kievit and Keiheuvel: 300 MSL
There will be two AATS. Min Time for every AAT is 1:45

Some additional informations to BelgiumCC:
BCC uses 18m class without consideration of indices. But the pilots are free, to select for every competition day a different plane type. So a pilot can use Antares or DG808 on weak days and JS1, Ventus3 or ASG29 on better days. Off course he can decide, to fly all days with one plane type.

Hi there,
I read that 2 tasks will be AAT.
I have only read about it and can't say I understant the little subtilities of this type of tasks.
I plan on using XCSoar to help me understand better what I should (try to) do.
I have seen a page with some AAT settings on XCSoar but any kind of help as far as settings or tactics will be greatly appreciated

An AAT is a type of task where you get a minimum time to fly an as large a distance as you can. In this competition 1:45 hours will be used as the minimum flying time. You will get a task with a start semi circle. 2 or 3 large circles and a finish sector. Your job is to fly the biggest distance you can get with turnpoints you can choose yourself in the 3 large circles. If you happen to fly shorter then this 1:45 hours the distance you achieved will still be divided by 1:45 hours so your average speed will go down. If you fly longer, the distance will be divided by the actual time you fly. The highest average speed wins as usual.
Now for the tactics. Because you can choose your own route, planning the flight is even more important. Try to avoid long legs into the wind by angling your task through the sectors so you fly perpendicular to the wind as much as possible. You always spend more time in a headwind then in a tailwind, so the more you fly perpendicular to the wind the better.
Then choose the distance you are going to fly. If you think you can make 100 kph on the task (you have to judge for yourself taking into account your skills, the plane and the weather), you are going to fly 175 km in 1:45. Now you can start to use XCsoar. Program the task into XCsoar and under "NAV - Task - Rules" set the task type as AAT. Also set the AAT min. time. Now there is a new option in the NAV menu (on page 2) called TARGET. This allows you to move a target in the sectors on the task. If you have the infobox AATDtgt set up you can see the distance via the targets you have set. Plan yourself a task by moving around the targets taking into account the expected wind and maybe any bad areas (lakes/sea) in the landscape.
Start flying the task via your set targets as you would fly a normal racing task. However when you get close to your chosen turnpoint choose when to turn tactically. There are 2 general rules:
1. Always turn a turnpoint in a thermal
2. make sharp corners
Why is this? Well, if you turn a thermal and you have tailwind, it is free distance and the top of the thermal will count as where you rounded the turnpoint. If you have headwind, the bottom of the thermal will count as your turnpoint and while climbing you are already being blown towards the next turnpoint, so also free distance. Sharp corners is because flying around aimlessly in a sector is distance that will not count. So try to fly straight lines to a good thermal in the sector. Use it as a turnpoint. And fly straight lines to your next target.
Once your happy where you want to turn, tell XCsoar that you have turned by clicking next turnpoint under NAV. You will start navigating towards your next target. Once you get to the final sector the decision is, when do I turn. XCsoar will also help you with this. There is an info box called "AAT dT". If it is red, you will arrive early, if it is blue you are good to turn. It will take into account your current average and the final glide you are going to make so you don't arrive early. You can also switch the last target to optimized (bottom of the screen in the target menu). It will automatically move your target to the most optimal point to turn (but remember to always use a thermal ).
Additional considerations:
- Don't fly the first couple of sectors too short or too long. Make sure the task you create has the last target somewhere in the middle of the last sector. That way you can turn earlier if you are slow, or further if you are fast. Nothing more frustrating than having to struggle to turn the last sector or running out of distance you can fly .
- If you get low and your average speed is bad, consider flying longer than the minimum time. If the second part of the task goes really well and your average speed can be increased by flying longer, do it! Drawback is that your final glide becomes a relatively shorter portion of the task, and that is where you usually make the most speed. So flying close to, but slightly above the minimum time is usually the fastest way.

mCR: mean climb rate of the whole flight | mGN: mean gliding number (gliding number without influence of wind)
mIAS: mean indicated airspeed (the speed you see on your speedometer, the real speed is higher depending on the altitude) | nLift: number of lifts
DeltaGN: additional gliding number (difference between mGN and GN of speed polar) | Vmet: average of rising and sinking air
AltLift: average climbed in a lift | Detour: Detour in percent, only gliding passages are regarded.

You can fly it offline with ghosts or study in SY or SCI etc.
