Towplane flying into sink ?

Post by Bre901 » Tue Apr 03, 2018 4:11 pm

I have tried to take off from Grenoble le Versoud (Jura-Mont-Blanc2) with strong SE wind (in order to test the wave).
However, the towplane kept turning stubbornly upwind into the sink (7 times) and then flew along the hills in the lee and could not climb above 350 AGL in more than 10 min. flying (ftr available upon request)

Maybe the AI needs some more training about mountain flying in windy conditions ...

Where is the turbo Čmelák we had in C1 when you need it

[edited to add that the towplane can be seen if you look carefully, there is a little wing behind the dashboard on the right-hand side]

It looks like the problem has been noted in other landscapes:
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=17879
I also got it on one flight (out of 2) out of Bellegarde-Vouvray (same landscape) but in that case the towplane finally got out of the sink.

I think this is clearly an issue that should be looked into by the development team.

Note to moderators : this topic could be merged with the one mentioned above.

I have installed 2.02 yesterday and I have noticed a clear improvement about the towplane.

In the same conditions (Jura-Mont-Blanc2, take-off from Grenoble-Le Versoud, SE wind 50 km/h) the towplanes still try to fly upwind, but make a wider turn in the valley and apparently try to avoid the lee on the downwind slopes.

2.01 (wind 134°) : 0-350m AGL in 12 minutes :( :(

2.02 (wind 135°) : 0-700m AGL in 5 minutes :D :D

A big thank to the developpers !

[Edited to add the wind direction to the picture caption, see next post]

I'm sorry my previous post was overly optimistic :
In the same conditions (Jura-Mont-Blanc2, take-off from Grenoble-Le Versoud, SE wind 50 km/h)
There was actually a 1° wind direction difference, but that was enough to trigger a runway change : 134° -> runway 05, 135° -> runway 23.

Although the Wilga is a bit more powerful than the Dynamic (?), the final result is quite similar to 2.01 when the conditions are strictly the same (I re-used the .ftr file), the towplane keeps on flying stubbornly into sink

2.02 (wind 134°) : 0-350m AGL in 13 minutes :( :(

Morality : in Grenoble le Versoud, if you want to takeoff with strong SE wind (nice wave), select a wind direction of no less than 135°

Although the subject is not critical, I shall open a support ticket if there is no reaction to this post

Let's just hope that my thanks to the developpers were only premature
